Re: War in the Middle East, again

it is perfectly understandable why someone whose people are being massacred would speak in anger against those who subscribe to the ideology that drives that massacre. violence, or the call to violence, against an oppressor by a member of the people it is oppressing is fundamentally, qualitatively ...

Re: War in the Middle East, again

the palestinian people are *actually being mass murdered* in an ongoing genocide. the genocide or forced removal of palestinians are the only two possible (obviously not mutually exclusive) end results of the ideology of zionism holding and keeping state power. i don't agree with someone calling for...

Re: War in the Middle East, again

I'm talking about, for instance, the way that they forcibly occupied a university building. oh my god they trespassed in a building on their own college campus!!! how violent!!!!! this is exactly the same as groups of thugs tear-gassing students and shooting fireworks into crowds of unarmed people,...

How many millions of Israelis need to participate in protests before you stop saying things like this? I, personally, have called out this behaviour many times in this thread alone, and more elsewhere on the Internet. Perhaps I should just keep on repeating that Zionism is not Netanyahu-ism , in th...

Re: Syllabic Rhotics

the difference between a vowel and a syllabic approximant is blurry, and while i don't agree with the assessment of NAE "er" as a true syllabic consonant rather than a vowel, i won't dispute it. but i find it very difficult to believe that a (presumably) native speaker of any variety of en...

are you asking us to believe that your realization of what is almost universally either a vowel or a V+C sequence is in fact a syllabic uvular consonant

the more i learn about them, the more i feel that the divisions between alphabet/abjad/abugida/syllabary are too blurry to stand up to any real scrutiny

Re: Flaws with the Metric System

i don't know that i'd agree that anything in the OP actually constitutes a flaw. the lowercase/uppercase doesn't seem like it would be an issue because the overlapping prefixes aren't likely to get confused: you're not taking medication by the megagram or measuring data by the millibyte. if the u.s....

Re: Modern Gothic

nouns (phase two—early modern gothic) one of the most distinctive sound changes between phases 1 and 2 is the nasalization and subsequent denasalization of vowels. among other effects, this led to the loss of a distinction between strong and weak nouns, since the nasal consonants that defined the l...

Mrs. is commonly [ˈmɪsəz] or [ˈmɪsɪz], but occasionally [ˈmɪsɪs]. [ˈmɪzɪz] "is said to be a sure test of Southern speech"; another southern pronunciation is [mɪz], sometimes with a lengthened [z] This kinda just sounds like he refuses to believe "Ms" is a thing, and thinks it's ...
