Re: Challenge: American English as a separate language
Otto, you know there is no such thing as "official status" in the US, right? As for the rest of it, I'm not sure who you think was coming across the Atlantic who didn't sound like a freak. I already mentioned Ulster Scots, who were an absolute majority of settler colonists in many areas. T...

Re: Challenge: American English as a separate language
Plenty of divergent dialects made it to North America in large numbers. Where I grew up, the largest ethnic group was "Scotch Irish," meaning there would have been a time when everyone in the Appalachians sounded like this child.

Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread's Sequel
The only sources Wikipedia cites are Iranian dictionaries, but the Iranian reconstruction given is muHs, so I doubt the author of this page knows something we don't know. Just typical overzealousness.

Re: "Experiencer"
I think you all have missed the main reason congrammars are written in plain terms. The conlanger is trying to communicate, while the linguist is trying to prove to their employer that they are on the cutting edge of their field. As for Zompist's use of "experiencer," I think this is an ac...

Didn't want to start a new thread for this, so here it goes: I'm looking for beta readers for a novella (~32k words). I'm not asking for free labour, but we can work out the sordid details by PM. Let me know if anyone here would be interested in helping me polish my work. I do enjoy reading; what s...

Re: My Quarantine Project: Galician
I translated Goethe's Wanderer's Nightsong I into Galician. This would have been a popular poem during the Austro-Hungarian period, when Galician intellectuals were heavily influenced by German culture. Below is the Galician text, an IPA transcription, the original in German, and Longfellow's Englis...

Re: My Quarantine Project: Galician
Here is a list of sound changes. I skipped the changes in grammar and usage over the years. It's mostly pretty usual stuff, showing a mix of Baltic and Slavic tendencies. For example, the second and third sibilants merge as in Lithuanian, but Galician also participates in the Second Slavic Palatiza...

My Quarantine Project: Galician
To keep myself busy in isolation, I started playing around with a Balto-Slavic language which I have confusingly decided to name Galician. It has about 900 words, and a short grammar found here. The whole thing is a little silly, but it passed the time.

Can you give us any hints on why you felt inspired to do this, and what the new grammar will be like? (or is it just an overhaul of the format and presentation?)

Re: Conlang Random Thread
This sort of thing (i.e. one distinct form and a bunch of identical ones) happens with verbs, too. In English, some verbs like "cut" only have two forms: third person singular present tense active voice indicative, and everything else.

The fourth one is beautiful.
I prefer 4, unless you specifically want the lateral fricative to be distinguished by its own glyph.
