Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
It seems I’ve gotten some sort of respiratory infection. On the one hand, this sort of thing really sucks, especially if you’re immune-suppressed. On the other, the past few years I’ve gotten an infection like this, it was like it sort of pre-immunized me to whatever was going around when I did wan...

Re: AIs gunning for our precious freelancers
This is what I always hated about programming in Java -- conventional Java design standards greatly encourage boilerplate coding, to the point that you need to use a Java IDE* which automates much of the writing of boilerplate for you, as it otherwise becomes simply unmanageable. * And the only IDE...

Re: Venting thread
My friend was wronged, and that wrong has been compounded seven times seven by society at large. There is no justice for him, and I am aggrieved. Bloody hell, that is awful. Meanwhile, I've just spent two weeks (slowly) recovering from an ME crash, and it looked like I was returning to normal, but ...

Re: Atheism and agnosticism thread
I'm writing a book on religion now, so I'm full of thoughts. :) I'll go out on a limb and tentatively hazard a speculative guess that the title of this book might possibly bear some resemblance to "The Religion Construction Kit". FWIW: Somewhere between atheist and agnostic, not sure which.

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
A user yesterday identified a major seemingly long-standing bug in console I/O for the first task started on the second core of the RP2040, which has since been fixed. Thing is, though, that I feel like an idiot for having not caught it myself, because it was such an obvious bug. Welcome to the won...

I think I might have some idea: |---------------|---------------|---------------|-----------------| left centre-left centre centre-right right <- nominally *|<-------------------- IRREDEEMABLY EVIL ----------------------->| <- actually * = acceptable in a very specific limited set of circumstances

Re: Please Help in Designing a Consonant System
I'd add /l r/ and possibly /w j/ to those consonants; maybe replace the palatals with postalveolars, but that's a matter of phonetics.

Re: So - what about crypto currencies?
QFT. Are there any legitimate uses? To me, it seems as if bitcoin & co. are "money" with which you can buy illicit drugs, firearms and the like, or pay ransom That's the entire point: allowing people the freedom to trade in things they're not supposed to because The Government Won't L...

Re: Venting thread
Picking up on what I posted in the Computer thread, as a result of a long drawn-out saga involving weird software behavior, I now have two online subscriptions to one and the same newspaper. I can use one of them perfectly fine, while the other is unusable; I can't even log in to it. At some time o...

Re: What are you reading, watching and listening to? - All languages
Anyway, one of O'Toole's main ideas about Brexit is that it is mostly an assertion of a specifically English , as opposed to British or UK, nationalism, which sounds about right to me. Oh, very much so. It has nothing whatsoever to do with most kinds of Scottish nationalism, for example. I'm not a ...
