Re: Suppletions for "to be"
Isn't 'be' itself from PIE *bʰuH- 'to grow' with an intermediate sense of 'to become'?
Anyway, for a field day of content verbs grammaticalising into copulas, somebody could bring up Sino-Tibetan copulas.

Re: Lemobrogian - the language of the Land of Eternal Spring.
I like the idea of the four cell table containing with declaration of the human rights, though the gloss could be more easily readable if it was directly below the Lemobrogian text and aligned to it.

Re: Maybe pruning?
As an aside: I wonder if upgrading phpBB to the latest version might be worth a try? Might be worth a try, though it's tedious. FWIW I ftp'd into the server and checked the error_log file. It has an innumerable set of errors like this: Stack trace: #0 /home3/verduria/public_html/cache/production/ur...

Re: The Index Diachronica
Now that it’s the new year, may I reiterate my call for people to have a go at submitting sound changes to the GitHub repository? Aight, sorry, I'm out of the loop, but is this about reformatting sound changes from the old ID to the new one using the new syntax, or about adding new sound changes fr...

Re: The Index Diachronica
Man, I keep telling myself that I'd make a review of the syntax and the website itself, then keep not doing it, because I have higher priority stuff (which, incidentally, also keep getting postponed). But I do look forward to making a pull request with those stylistic suggestions of mine, and maybe ...

I really dig the aesthetics. Are those retconned, or did you start making some new glyphs?

Americans attacking Metric measurements: "Why can't I use a nice whole number below 10 for THAT particular everyday item? Ugh, what a dealbreaker!" Americans defending Imperial measurements: "To convert from dorths to shmogadiboos you only have to divide by 17. It's simple, really!&qu...

Re: Flaws with the Metric System
Before I read your post, I didn't even know about the m/M distinction, and I've used the metric system for all my life.. And how does the sign in the photo you posted cause confusion? What else could "KM" mean in that context? Sure, it's clear for "KM", but what about "MG&q...

Re: The Computer And General Tech Thread - Software, Hardware, Questions, etc.
My view of Rust is that it is the language C++ should be but isn't. That said, there are plenty of use cases where using C++ (or Rust) is pure insanity - they are just too complex and give you few benefits for very many things. Of course I think that there are better high-level languages than Pytho...

Re: Aesthetic Considerations
If the design was up to me, I'd remove borders between areas of different colours, and I'd replace 90deg corners of said areas with rounded corners. Some greater padding and nicer to the eye font wouldn't hurt, either. I can’t imagine how that would result in anything other than a totally illegible...

Re: The Index Diachronica
So, at this point I’ve posted a few mockups, and we seem to have decided on what the final result should be like, more or less. Now we just need to build this thing. At the moment, I’ve been handwriting an HTML page for each family. This is annoyingly laborious and boring. It also limits the capabi...
