Re: The World in 2100

Seconding Sal's advice, I don't think I'd start with GWP. Rather, I'd advise figuring out, roughly, what kind of technological advances and political change you'd expect for the next decades, and then based on these figure out a rough idea of world GDP. Once you've done that, and assuming you don't ...

Re: "Hansenese" My Personal Artlang/Stealthlang

So how does this rough outline of the beginnings of my conlang sound? Too weird, "you're missing x, y and z to make this a good conlang" or what? Unfortunately, it's too early to tell :) A few things you should maybe be aware of: OSV word order is fairly unusual. /g/ without /k/ is unusua...

Re: DJP criticisms

From what I understood Daenerys was a sex slave of sorts (also queen with all the power and respect that the position has but still bought without her consent) but Drogo wanted her to actually love and respect him at the same time. Yes, I see your point — though I'm a little uncomfortable with usin...

Re: Are you Tarandim? A culture test.

Thanks for the comments, everyone!

As for the section headers, these are adaptations of the headers on the American culture test. But I'm not sure the titles I used work... I'll probably change them.

Re: Retransliterate Klingon!

I think that the native Latin transcription is the best, as the phonology has been made to be unpleasant to the human ear, as the transcription is to the human eye ... You can otherwise try to do worse ... I enjoyed making a pseudo-French orthography as I felt that it clashed with the archetypal Kl...

Re: DJP criticisms

But the Dothraki aren't exactly villains or heroes. Their attitudes to women are awful, but it many ways their society is shown in the books to be better for Danaerys than Westerosi culture or the cities of Essos. Wow, that's a new one. "Sure, these people may be genocidal gang-rapists, but th...

Are you Tarandim? A culture test.

I think it's been a while since anyone made a culture test for a conculture. Well, in any case, here's a new one! The Tarandim culture test. This applies to pre-imperial Tarande (that's about two thousand years before present for that conworld; and two thousand years after the 'Prophetess' story).

Re: Grammar Nazis of Your Conlangs

I used to be like that. Then, I studied English phonetics, to try to get rid of my stupid accent. An interesting side effect is that I started to make spelling mistakes ! Like, the other day I caught myself typing *munkey instead of monkey . Previously, I would have done the opposite mistake (prono...

Re: Globalisation and language change

What zompist said makes me think of a related phenomenon. As a direct consequence of texting and Facebook (or so it seems), Moroccans have started writing in darija (which was I believe unthinkable twenty years ago; back then it was either French or MSA). So, I guess I'll have to wait for cryonics t...

Re: Globalisation and language change

A random thought that occured to me. It makes sense to me, but I can't exactly prove it; so it might be deep, but it might be stupid. Aren't most current languages, in a way, the result of limited forms of globalization? When were the last times wildly different cultures were unexpectedly brought to...

Re: General American and actors

There are two difference with a French r that I noticed: first it's an approximant. (My r is a fricative.), and second it's noticeably labialized. I wouldn't risk a comparison with other languages. (German r is often vocalized; I don't know what exactly is going one with the rhotic in Hebrew, but ha...

Re: How to describe morphosyntax?

Thanks everyone for the advice! So what did I choose? I've picked option 2 - discussing usage immediately after (and sometimes before) describing the morphology. It makes for a more interesting read. Option 1 doesn't work that well with unfamiliar morphosyntax; it works well with Indo-European langu...

zompist wrote: Sun Aug 05, 2018 2:56 pm That fixed the loop, but tried to go to the wrong page.

But I fixed the original problem anyway, by making an index.html that redirects to almeo.html.

I do appreciate the help— I never learned how to do .htaccess.
No problem, I'm happy to help — and I'm glad you could find a solution.

Re: The Virtual Verduria Feedback Thread

Looks like it loops now. Crap. I think we need an extra condition: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^.*.html RewriteRule ^(.*)$ almeo.html?$1 [R=301,L,QSA] (Sorry about the back-and-forth. Re: General American and actors

Do not assume that how I speak is universal for people from Wisconsin. Also note that if you do try to speak like me, you'll have to learn a doubly articulated postalveolar and uvular approximant for where /r/ comes after a coronal, and you'll have to learn to labialize your /r/s (my initial /r/ is...

And I bothered practicing retroflex r when I could've pretended I was from Wisconsin all along!

I don't think it's velar, it sounds like something like [ˈsɔːʁʷi].

languages especially con are too long to implement (too long to build and too long to learn) and too easy to drill (too many sources accesible) ... nothing beats a code for spies ... Languages have worked out fairly well in warfare. An advantage is that you can't do much with cryptoanalysis. Restri...

Re: The Virtual Verduria Feedback Thread

Thanks, Are Lande! Sadly, though, it doesn't work. Any request just goes to the main page. Any idea what might be going wrong? Ah, yes. I think you need a redirect instead, and besides the query string was wrong. So the correct rule should be: (crossing fingers that I don't mess up this time) Rewri...
