Sound change applier troubleshooting thread
Ok, I was originally having some issues getting a set of sound changes to work in SCA2 (under read more, if you're interested), but I've found a work around so it should be OK for now. On the other hand, I'm new to using sound change appliers in general (I usually do all my sound changes by hand), s...

Turkic (feel like if it was Turkic that fact probably would have been obvious but still worth a shot)?

Re: Grammaticalization Quickie Thread
Not sure about this - I'd say that in a very simple sentence, such as " Ich esse gerade Kuchen " (" I'm eating cake right now "), German has SVO, and it "only" turns SOV when things get even the slightest bit more complicated. Agreed. When I say "underlying word o...

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread
What IE languages have retain [w] for PIE *w and/or [j] for PIE *j? Obviously at least English has (everyone? only some places?) but *w > v seems to have happened in all the rest of Germanic, Romance, and Indo-Aryan at least.

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread
I have a conlang, whose current name is just L. Initially, I decided to rid it of voiced plosives because its sister, P has them everywhere. Then, I realised that having no voiced plosives was rather boring and no decided I would allow them only after nasals, so nd, mb, ŋɡ. If I, therefore, insert ...

Re: Question about the development of Portuguese
In a word like /kaleda/, you'd have syncope leading to cluster formation. Compare Latin calidus > Portuguese caldo . In rigidus , the /g/ palatalises before it can be lost and you get the inherited form rijo . How was syncope handle in longer words – say, something of the shape CVCVCVC or CVCVCVCVC?

Re: Grammaticalization Quickie Thread
Ok, this does at least seem possible then, but I'm still not sure what kind of pressures would cause this to happen (as opposed to clitisizing the "normal" way). On a related note, how do construct-state type systems for marking possession tend to develop, anyway? On an unrelated note: how...

could a possessive preposition cliticize onto the preceding noun and eventually be reanalyzed as a sort of construct-state suffix?

A very small question about Mandarin: I've heard that the 3rd tone is often realized with creaky voice. Have there been any studies which examine the degree to which the distinction between the 3rd tone from others relies on voice vs. pitch? For example, if one pronounced the pitch contour of the 2n...

Re: Amusing Language Names
I think these count— Bembe, Mesme, Khalkha— as the middle consonant would have to be represented with a virama (vowel-canceling diacritic). I think this depends on whether conjuncts are considered single graphemes or not. My intuition is to say that they are, but I'm not sure what the consensus in ...
