Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread
Seriously, what part of [ˌɑ̃ːʁ̃ˤɯːp̚ˈpʰɑːmʁ̩ˤ(ː)] is hard to understand? /pɑmər/? I've only ever heard /pɔlmər/. Now this surprises me. I can only recall hearing the former (well, its non-rhotic equivalent). [ɑm] in -alm words has mostly been reverted by spelling pronunciation, but I'm a little sur...

On the question of polls, you could ask people "Are you responding to this poll right now, yes or no?" and the nos would not dip below ten percent. People always assume the floor is zero for poll responses, but it never is. 4% all neither uncommon opinions in conservative circles nor inco...

Are Americans that interested in socialism? No. Socialism, like welfare, is when you take money from the old and the rich to give it to the young and the poor, which is a ghastly inversion of the true purpose of government: taking money from the young and the poor to give it to the old and the rich...

I've never heard "Newfoundland" pronounced with secondary stress.
This sounds wrong to me - I have /merɨlɨnd/ with schwi, pronounced approximately [meʴːln̩(d)]. (It probably should be /merɨlənd/.)

If you think blackmail is a good political system, and people are wrong to refuse to be blackmailed, then honestly you deserve the world we have now. This is why the Dems are as bad as they are.
