I just saw a pretty good one, I think: Biden inches away from Netanyahu as Israeli PM fails to heed US on Gaza.
1) Biden is moving away from Netanyahu, slowly and gradually;
2) Biden's position is right next to Netanyahu, nearly touching.

Re: Conlang Random Thread
Any Japonic conlangs out there? In an areal sense, but not a 'genetic' one, yes; the only conlanging I've actually put my hand to in years and years has been a bogolang with long Japanese contact history. The 21st century fashion seems to be for Korean(ish) over Japanese(oid) conlangs though. (And ...

Re: What have you accomplished today?
I've been reviewing, revising, and expanding on the verbal morphology of a Tungusic-based bogolang I've mostly had on the back burner for the last decade. In fact, I'm not gonna look up the last time I posted in this thread, because I have a feeling I might have been fiddling with the same thing bac...

'Shed' and 'gable' (roof) describes the structure of the roof (where the slopes go and connect to each other) -- it has nothing to do with whether it's over a porch or veranda.

Re: What do you call ...
From what I remember of my time in construction, "roof". Maybe architects and art history people have other names for them, but I can't recall ever hearing such a thing.

But also remember, survival of the fittest does not simply mean the survival of the strongest or fastest. It's survival of the most fit to the available niches . [...]Evolution does not optimize, it finds the good enough option and iterates off of that. Thanks for putting this better, and more quic...

Re: Random Thread
Wild horses do have the same problems (at least, catastrophic leg failure, weak lungs, and collapsing/self-knotting intestines) from what I've read. I remember reading once (decades back) an article speculating that the genus might have gone extinct already if it weren't for domestication, and const...

Re: the zoominess of deer, I saved a comment from somewhere (Twitter? Tumblr? A blog?) once about 'Why Horses Are So Fucked', which I'm reposting below -- less images and slightly condensed. I don't have the original URL any more. My entirely half-assed understanding of Why Horses Explode If You Loo...

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread
It actually seems less crackpottish than much of Greenberg's or the Starostins' work just at first thought. Surprised to find myself doing this, but I think Starostin (at least the senior one) is barely a crackpot at all, and it's blurring useful (or at least, entertaining ) categories to drop him ...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
Today I was imagining a language in the vein of Brahui or Albanian, or perhaps Romani or Ossetian, in that it would be either an isolate (or an "isolate within the family"), or geographically far-removed from the rest of its family, having been exposed to many layers of loanwords and prof...

I could do something covering Tungusic pretty readily, a little less readily for Mongolic, and with some actual inconvenience/legwork, I suppose, Salishan, Turkic, Bodic, maybe some others.

Nortaneous just took the pixels out from under my fingers. Of the handful of languages/families whose histories I feel even a little conversant with that appear in the current Index, the material is either extremely sketchy because there really aren't accepted reconstructions out there, extremely sk...

Citations please. Most of the Ghits I can find for this compound are from this year and the oldest dates back only to 2018. Many are actually for "pedophile/groomer". I followed the NAMBLA debate and I don't recall ever hearing it. In fact, I don't ever recall hearing the term "groom...

I've noticed and feel the same way, Moose-tache. I'll go a little further and say that the 'the Russian empire must be decisively defeated, and broken up into independent nation-states' theme that I hear a lot from online political wonks, and slowly but steadily in mainstream media, seems to me simu...
