The birthdays thing

Post by WarpedWartWars »

Who actually pays attention to the birthdays thing at the bottom of the index page, other than me sometimes?

Also, what is it actually called?

Happy birthday!

It may be that not that many users advertise this particular data point about themselves on their profile. I don't remember ever seeing a notification on the "birthdays thing" on this board.
(but on another forum I used to frequent, people actively used that feature)

My birthday isn't shown here when it happens, because I prefer people on the internet not to know the exact date.

I still get a happy birthday email every year from the fiveminute.net forums. I haven’t posted there in decades.

Mine's a bit public knowledge because of my Ph.D. thesis: in Luxembourg, the cover pages for theses include date (and place!) of birth, and the theses are (generally) publicly accessible. (Mine went public about a year after my defense.)

I prefer to not make my date of birth publicly available if I can help it, because so many things use it as a (very weak) form of authentication, often along with one's address (which is publicly available).

I'm similarly paranoid and never leave my birthdate anywhere.

So I get unexpected 'happy birthday' emails about six or seven times a year!

In any case, happy birthday! (belated)

As I couldn't remember what I had done when I signed up, I have entered my birthday and month but not the year. I don't know if it would still appear in the birthdays thing on the front page.
Twitter won't let me access my @Jonlang_ account, so I've moved to Mastodon: @jonlang@mastodon.social
