Re: timekeeping and calendars

Oooh, neat! and indonesia is pretty close to the equator, its climate seems to be less seasonal than in other places at least with regards to temperatures, with rains that are not *that* seasonal either, so it fits.

Re: United States Politics Thread 46

Sure, the fascists will always try to twist what you say against you. But even then you should not help them! Calling people as morally bad simply for being born into category X is the perfect way to alienate people against you, and the fascists will certainly exploit said alienation to their own a...

Re: United States Politics Thread 46

I don't know, man... it may be the case that there's no way to not "play into the hands of fascists". like sure, if you defend your ideas, they'll make waves and waves of anti-that propaganda: but then, what, is the correct course of action? nothing? is that not, ultimately, also playing i...

Re: timekeeping and calendars

I think it's interesting to imagine how the conception of time would develop in a society where astronomical cycles are practically meaningless. On Earth, seasonal variations are plainly obvious almost everywhere - if not directly through climate, then indirectly, like in river throughput. But on a...

Ellirnae (something like [e'ʝɨɾ.nə], I suppose), my current conworld, is a mars-sized moon orbiting a superjupiter called Tarka. Another of its peculiarities is that the difference between its rotational inclination, its orbital inclination and its jupiter's orbit around the local star are so small ...

BY SOME MIRACLE I GOT A WOMAN’S NUMBER TONIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! fucking aye bro! My Mom's car passed the fit-for-the-road test! Since she absolutely needs the car to get around, and there's no way her, me, or anyone else in the family could have paid for massive repair, never mind a new ...

I'm not sure I buy it outright... or, rather, it seems suprising! Like... in general, coaches are ex-practitioners, because there's a lot that books just can't teach. *but* maybe she's not a coach, maybe she's more of a traffic controller? like, she directs her, more like a conductor of an orchestra...

Re: United States Politics Thread 46

I don't properly remember the research, and it may have been debunked first, but I'm pretty sure I remember that in general, the right wing people are driven much more strongly by disgust. so, yeah, the bugs make sense: in my own country the proto-fascists tend to speak about 'lacras' to speak about...

Re: Anxiety and the ZBB

From what I've read, panic attacks come quickly, are intense, and go away after about half an hour, whereas anxiety attacks build up more slowly and last for much longer. There's more to it than that, but it seems to be a reasonable rule of thumb. Oh... then those were definitely anxiety attacks. t...

and their idea of "nine hour days" was "working constantly for nine hours at a time, not counting using the restroom or eating lunch", tracked using "time-tracking" tools.

Oh... hmmm... this is true, though the tendency of states to get bigger and bigger came from before gunpowder. but yeah, it's not as clear-cut as it initially looked to me.

Re: Anxiety and the ZBB

I'm down I've had plenty of anxiety attacks, but they started relatively recently: I was mostly without mental health problems during my youth, and it wasn't until the pandemic which for me was itself a nice thing, I didn't mind being confined, loved working from home and regularly broke the rules a...

Re: Women in IT

I've worked in IT for many years (well, used to, I'm doing data analysis for surveys and shit these days, a lot more boring) and I don't think I've seen a single company in the industry that does not view crunch as a normal thing to happen (scrum masters call it "sprints", and yes, I know ...

Hmmmm... I don't know, man, enclosure -and other things- really did a number of peasants in order to get them to become urban proletariat. But yeah, there's probably a fair amount of emergence to the whole thing. I don't know that I buy that it can't be foreseen whether a tech will cause centralizat...

I don't know, man. if "don't feed the trolls" is true then we better not think of fascists as trolls: if those guys are left -as indeed they too often are- to just build up their base of support, mobilize, campaign, and convince through their various histerics, lies and pipelines to recrui...

Re: Soshul meedja.

True, but I think some technologies are more inherently centralizing than others: for example the printing press. sure, the rich will always be in a better position to avail themselves of any technology, the holy roman emperor could just buy presses by the dozen, and this cycle of centralization of ...

it's not that complicated. yes they are bad. bad bad. very bad. BAD. also, why people do the things they do is interesting, and "they do bad because they are bad" is not a good why. you seem to think i'm seeking to justifying them, or minimize the bad, or whatever: I'm not, I'm just asking...

Re: United States Politics Thread 46

In other words, what I actually said (they wanted to harm women) is correct and you can't find a way to deny it, but that is not convenient for you and you'd rather respond to a fantasy figure who said "they're bad and evil and I don't care why." Try something less intense, man... like &q...

Only somewhat related: Does anyone else have the impression that really a lot of Youtube ads are targeting people with minor medical issues that are typical for people from a certain age onwards? If so, I'd say that's an interesting sign of the times: 15 years ago I wouldn't have assumed that peopl...

Re: United States Politics Thread 46

I feel strawmanned. no I don't think I said anything to the effect of poor lambs: instead, I said "they're bad and want to hurt women" is not an adequate explanation. like, okay, plenty of them did in fact want to hurt women, and we know this because they did in fact hurt women and it's pr...
