Re: United States Politics Thread 46
Nah, like... I agree that the modern antivax movement is quite without grounds etcetera... but it *is* their body, ultimately, and that doesn't trump all other considerations, but it's also not nothing. I'm all for requirements for particular things, like schools and whatever, but if some dude lives...

my gran (born 1913) used to say exactly the same thing.I was literally told in grade school, "Some are called to marriage, some are called to priesthood." There was no third option presented.

so the second attempt at a new constitution... after the triumph of the rechazo option, the politicians agreed to try again: mostly because the rechazo talking heads had said that if they won they'd not simply stick with the pinochet text, but would try again, "this time we'll get it right"...

Re: United States Politics Thread 46
A couple of hours ago I heard that US media, when they show bald eagles, often dub in the sounds made by some other birds - apparently usually red-tailed hawks - because the sounds made by bald eagles themselves don't sound impressive enough for the national animal of a powerful country. Pretty fun...

it could be the same reason we're fascinated by any non-urban landscape: they're just pretty in a way that cities are fugly? like, they're what we evolved to live in: relatively moist earth covered in vegetation.

@bradrn I'm sorry for calling you American, didn't mean nothing by it. for myself, I don't think the repus and the demos are the same thing, but like... what i mean is that outside culture war stuff <and, don't get me wrong, culture war stuff is not nothing, but it's also not everything> are they re...

I absolutely agree with that. especially true with isolating languages like english or chinese: sometimes if feels like just listing use cases and how the language handles them works better, some websites for learning chinese take this approach.

I feel as if americans can underestimate how broad political divides can be: in other countries, you have parties which are communist northkoreaphiles, you have just very thinly veiled nazi parties, you have confessional parties which are for literal, on the books, explicit theocratic government, pa...

if what you want is terms without loading that might be hard: even if you find one, it'll acquire loading shortly after its adoption. everyone -who is a politician, at least- is a centrist in the sense that they aspire to *be* the center, and the only reason the bidens and merkels are the center is ...

The thing is what term do we have to refer to the likes of Biden and Merkel if we have decided that "centrist" really refers not to people at the general center of the political spectrum but to crypto-fascists? establishment ? institutionalists? neoliberals? The Cathedral, a la moldbug?

Re: "centrism"
to me there's very little difference between being a conservative and a centrist, in that both are mostly boil down to preserving the status quo, though using different rhetoric. I'm more suspicious of soi dissant centrists than of conservatives, though: if you don't want to move the overton to some...

hmmm... true. and It'd be quite a waste for our electronic missus butterknife to be spending perfectly good ink to read today's memes on Her Majesty's Royal Nine Gagges, or wearing down the various tiny levers you'd need for a dot flip display. perhaps some eraseable printing medium? like an etch-a-...

I think the memory thing is probably a bigger problem than the display one. seven segment displays, big flip dot displays, or bip bips could do the trick. but yeah, perforated cardboard would make bad databases. select * from posts if date < 90, we'll have your results tomorrow after a lot of crank,...

Take a Connecticut Yankee but without the engineering background that the character in Twain’s book had. It'd probably worky better for things that are just a brute fact we know but they didn't: stuff like "plastics are chemicals made out of oil... I think in my world they use heat" would...

Imagine what would have happened if the Victorians had worked out how to use the telegraph to transmit porn. That would have been the major paradigm shift. Does it? Oh, surely this here board has more functionality than a newspaper, old chap. What Moose said, yeah. Also, it's not that difficult, if you're willing to forego the fancy graphics purely mechanical displays aren't impossible. using such things, one can, for instance, send and receive text over vast d...
