Re: Happy things thread!

Spent my lunch hour marching with the graduate student workers' union at my university as they presented their petition for recognition to the provost. Do you know what union they will be a part of, or whether it would be a purely local union? The United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of Ame...

Uyse? grammar links

I was skimming the grammar and noticed the links to the Almeopedia pages for Hensaut and Bečagbi seem to be dead. I was able to renavigate via the main page but I thought you might like it brought to your attention, Zompist.

Re: Happy things thread!

I made fixes to a number of significant multicore multitasking bugs w.r.t. zeptoforth on the Raspberry Pi Pico in the last couple days, which are now included in patch release 0.52.3 . Oh yeah! My callus removal appointment went really well! I hadn't expected to get an appointment during what in Ge...

Re: Elections in various countries

I don't understand why everyone is saying the GOP lost this election. They won the house and that's all they need to stop the Democrats and even sabotage them. Literally zero progress will happen over the next few years and things will almost certainly get far worse. I would basically say it's beca...

Re: We have no Priests, but we have non-Priests

One thing I would be really curious about is how much one could be a devout Irreanist and disregard some of the metaphysical stuff. Life after death is something they're explicitly described as agnostic about; if a person dumps the material/mental dualism and things like Jeerio's beloved alchemy, as...

Re: Elections in various countries

My hope is that Trump and De Santis eat each other alive, metaphorically speaking, during the primary season, and thereby ruin the chances of whichever of them comes out on top. Barring further developments which render such a prediction moot.

Spent my lunch hour marching with the graduate student workers' union at my university as they presented their petition for recognition to the provost. The university now has a couple working days to voluntarily certify the union, which has a supermajority of workers who have signed union cards. Th...

Re: Random Thread

I always took it as A. a rule of thumb like Linguoboy says, one that may be fun to think about but is only one aspect of the general topic; and B. a very specific test. I basically go with the elements as I remember them being described in the original comic where it seemed comparable to some of tho...

Re: Random Thread

I say pass if it is the type of conversation where topics drift and you can distinguish between different parts of the conversation by topic. A twenty minute conversation where they discuss sharks in the first five minutes and Owen Wilson’s role in The Life Aquatic in the last five minutes seems lik...

Re: ZONE OF FIRE GONE?!

I am on the patreon and there are certainly deep consequences, some of which I find quite creepy in a fun way, until such time as we receive the clarifications. Don’t know if you want spoilers or not, because I think Zompist may reveal everything after a suitable period of time, but I like where he’...

Re: Venting thread

Why are there people who, when you acoustically didn't understand something they said, and ask them to repeat it, will assume that you didn't understand their meaning , and will, then, instead of simply repeating what they said, provide you with clarifications that are completely useless for you if...

Re: Maraille

Definitely seems plausible. I figured the Incatena might lean towards #1 but I wasn't entirely sure how fast it could be done, and I don't know if you envisioned the canonical version of Maraille as having support for #1 any time soon anyway. If I do start a campaign, I am likely to aim for somethin...

Re: Elections in various countries

I was reading an editorial today which endorsed Macron in the practical sense of what the author suggested for French voters to do in this particular election but which noted a line he uttered in maybe 2016 or thereabouts about how France needs to avoid a point ten years in the future where someone...

Re: What are you reading, watching and listening to? - All languages

I recently bought the Baburnama and got Ada Palmer's A Will to Battle from a local library, and am going to start the latter first because I am obliged to return it. Palmer has a series, of which this book is the third of four, set a few hundred years in the future in which people tried to set up a ...

Re: Elections in various countries

I generally agree with Travis as far as this election goes. I think I would be pretty disgruntled if I were French right now. I was reading an editorial today which endorsed Macron in the practical sense of what the author suggested for French voters to do in this particular election but which noted...

Maraille

I may possibly be in a situation where I could use your Maraille setting in an rpg campaign in a few months (or maybe it won't happen, but I will be moving to another state and was talking about the topic with someone who is moving to the same place.) I got thinking about stuff probably beyond the s...

Re: Russia invades Ukraine

I am somewhat intentionally discounting the Ukrainian casualty figures for that reason - it's clear that Russia isn't doing nearly as well as Russia would like and that Ukraine is doing as well as might reasonably be expected, but given the nature of how wars work, I would have to do nothing but res...

Has ye olde Geoff Eddy webpage on bogolangs permanently disappeared from the internet? If I've successfully divined the page you're seeking, it's been archived here using the esoteric technological sorcery of the Wayback Machine . Of course, this will provide little benefit to you if you're wanting...

Re: Postpositions?

I do think (English) transitive verbs are divided into those which require an explicit object and those which merely allow one. "Consider" seems to be the former ("Let me think. / ?Let me consider."); "bake" is the latter. I can recall specific instances when I have sa...
