Re: Retransliterate Klingon!

Klingon is a little difficult to romanize as-is, but it's possible to reconstruct an earlier stage of the language and base the romanization on that. Dialectal vacillation between voiced stops and nasals, taken in combination with the retroflexion of the coronal voiced stop, would be best read as im...

Re: The glebst of gleb, V2.0

Has anyone put up a version of gleb's web interface that can take a seed as a parameter?

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread (Regionalism)

2) "t"s in the middle of words tend to be replaced by glottal stops: New Bri'ain, not New Britain, in a way that varies statewide. Debuccalization of /t/ before /n/ (or its syllabic equivalent) is characteristic of a lot of North American dialects. Post-vocalic [t] is practically non-exis...

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread

Voiced plosives can turn into implosives. Voiceless plosives can also turn into implosives. But breathy-voiced plosives probably can't.

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread

*v *j > b ɟ is attested in Nganasan. /d g/ only occur natively from consonant gradation. In Nivkh, there's initial lenition in certain environments. /tʰ t/ lenite to /r̥ r/, and /cʰ c/ lenite to /s z/. There doesn't have to be a firm distinction between fricatives and affricates; some languages in E...
