Re: War in the Middle East, again
Apparently Jews are treated better in Iran than in much of the Middle East -- but that is not saying much (considering just how atrociously they are treated in much of the Middle East; IIRC not too long ago Iraq put in place a law mandating the death penalty for ties to the "Zionist Entity&quo...

Re: War in the Middle East, again
The fact that Jews were treated like utter crap throughout the Middle East after the 1947-1948 war despite most of them having no part in said war is a big reason why almost all of them moved to Israel (generally with what they could pack in a suitcase at most), and I have heard nothing that indica...

Re: War in the Middle East, again
according to the wiki, there's fewer than 10k jews in Iran, from something like 50k back before the revolution. Is that indicative of how they are treated now? Jews left for Israel from all over the world, especially unstable places and Middle Eastern countries. The fact that Jews were treated like...

Re: Challenge: American English as a separate language
What historical circumstances could lead to American English developing towards a separate language, at least as different from British English as Afrikaans from Dutch? In our world the high literacy rate of the colonists (aided by the printing press) and constant contact with Britain meant that bo...

Re: War in the Middle East, again
I hear all the neighboring states declared war when Israel was created. Was this because they saw Israel as a crusader state? Was their reaction worse than the opposition faced by, say, Rojava? The official narrative that Arabs/Muslims/poors are irredeemably antisemitic doesn't seem right to me. In...

Re: Resources Thread
I was linked to this impressively accessible grammar of West Greenlandic: https://oqa.dk/assets/aitwg2ED.pdf . It’s a little eccentric in its presentation, but then again West Greenlandic is a little eccentric too, so it works well. From just reading the first few pages this seems much more "f...

Re: RPG thread
On a completely different note, D&D did expand my vocabulary with interesting words like "phylactery" and "thaumaturgist". I just googled "dnd phylactery" and was amazed by how little D&D phylacteries had to do with RL phylacteries... Somehow I am not surprised...

Re: War in the Middle East, again
The second is quite the opposite: I think we expect a lot better from Israel, because, among other things it's a democracy with strong cultural ties to us. I don't know how to compare indignation but I think people feel or felt the same about British and US war crimes. The Iraq War, or the Troubles...

Re: War in the Middle East, again
I get the impression that people implicitly seem to expect (due to the frankly rather racist view, to be honest) that as a Western (with a big W) country Israel ought to be better than, say, any random less-developed African or Asian country, so when it is not they are apt to criticize it ─ or care ...

Re: War in the Middle East, again
In this case, Palestine matters right now because the IDF is bombing Gaza to smithereens and starving those it hasn't bombed in a very disproportionate fashion at the very present. And Sudan matters right now , and Myanmar also matters right now , and… you get the point, I hope. Do you really ? Lik...

Re: War in the Middle East, again
Everybody else gets to have an apartheid state that's actively committing genocide and lying about it, but suddenly people object when the Jews do it? Nobody makes a peep when there's ethnic cleansing in Sudan or Myanmar (don't google it), or when the AfD tries to do the fourth reich (don't google ...

Re: War in the Middle East, again
do we remember what a state is? it is generally understood to be the monopoly of violence over a territory: how about the other part? jewish here means an ethnicity [...] So, an ethnostate, a policy of the monopoly of violence being held by a certain ethnic group, presumably in its own interest, an...

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
Okay, I have fixed my "type" classes functionality and it is now working well, such that I can compile src/common/special_oo.fs to flash so I do not need to reload it every time I reboot if I want to use show, hash, or equal?.

Re: War in the Middle East, again
C'mon, we'r all linguists here, we all know it's never this simple. This is like saying "'capitalism is an economic system based on capital, nothing more, nothing less". Zionism is as Zionism does. You can say that support for settlements in the occupied territories isn't definitionally p...

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
I have realized I put a stupid bug in zeptoscript with regard to "type" classes (not to be confused with Haskell's type classes). Specifically, the issue is that I made specifying them initialize them in RAM, but if you tried to initialize them in flash they would disappear after rebooting...
