Re: A decryption challenge
I haven't looked at it in a while, though I did discover that dots properly appear only on glyphs with extenders. The x-height glyphs with dots only appear like that alone, and in 4 specific words, so they must be abbreviated from forms with extenders.

Re: Random Thread
Thanks! Some ideas there I hadn't thought of :) I wouldn't expect a person with "a normal-person amount of linguistics knowledge" to be able to guess the answer to any of these questions except the Disney one and maybe the LotL one. I have an abnormal-person amount of linguistics knowledge...

Re: Random Thread
I'm making a linguistics quiz for some friends (who have a normal-person amount of linguistics knowledge) and trying to come up with some questions about conlangs suitable for absolute noobs, but I'm stumped. Any ideas? There are a few LotR fans in the group but I don't want them to have unfair adva...

Re: Another decryption challenge (hopefully easier)
I'm going to direct at quinterbeck the same question directed at my own code: is this phonemic, or is it based on the English writing system? It's mostly phonemic, but does preserve a few elements of written English. Hints: Consonants are almost completely phonemic. For vowels, a few aspects of Eng...

Fixed that now, ɳ has become ζquinterbeck wrote: ↑Thu Sep 17, 2020 4:37 pm Oh crumbs, I've slipped into an old version partway through, although just for one character - the one you've labelled ɳ should be the same as ζ. I'll fix the text tomorrow

Oh crumbs, I've slipped into an old version partway through, although just for one character - the one you've labelled ɳ should be the same as ζ. I'll fix the text tomorrow  There are five diacritics which would correspond to five vowel letters? And maybe there's also an inherent schwa? But al...

Re: A decryption challenge
Thanks for the extra text, I'd like to clarify a few things. Glyphs in green I initially thought were new characters, but now I think they're actually handwriting variants. Red is new series, and yellow is existing series with new extenders. The glyph in blue - is this two characters combined? If so...

Another decryption challenge (hopefully easier)
For anyone who wants to get their teeth into decrypting an English cipher that's somewhat easier than Risla's, here's one for you! I devised this a few years ago and don't use it very much (you can see had to do some surgery in places). The only non-English word in the text is the name of the cipher...

My word, there's quite a bit to get my teeth into there! Goodness gracious, there are things here I never dreamed of.

Re: A decryption challenge
In the example text given, there are no examples of /ʒ/. Interesting! I've been hypothesizing that pairs distinguished by an attached horizontal stroke are voiced-voiceless pairs, but I haven't found a way to make that fit the data yet. Ignoring a1::a1b, that leaves seven pairs present (a2 a3 a4 a5...

Re: A decryption challenge
Is the script phonemic? Or near enough? I've been assuming it is, but probably should check. (EDIT: ignoring abbreviations, I should say)
Are there any sounds of English that don't appear in your text? If yes, what?

Lots of interesting things happening in this sentence! I’d like to ask some questions about it: Is there any particular reason why the habitual is marked on the noun rather than the verb? What does ‘ABST’ mean? yeinoh-odu ‘too easily’ looks like an adverb, but is marked with the instrumental case —...

Re: Conlang fluency thread
I jump to conclusions too easily. ____ (Actually — on reflection, that sentence would make a great translation challenge! It’s short, but idiomatic enough to make it tricky to translate. Certainly I have no idea how I would translate this into any of my conlangs, hence the absence of conlang text.)...

A little tangential, but have you read Planet Narnia, by Michael Ward? I found it a very enjoyable and interesting read myself.

Re: A decryption challenge
My working assumption is that the x-height characters indicate consonants (possibly with inherent vowel) and the combination of modifiers (ascenders, descenders, dots and possibly line diacritics) describe vowels, possibly underspecified. The long-based character you corrected me on (I'll call it a6...
