Re: Phonemically weird words

Not a word I use regularly, but apparently "nihonium" is supposed to be pronounced /nɪˈhoʊ.ni.əm/. Are there any other English words with [ɪ] directly followed by [h]? I think I would naturalise the pronunciation as [nə.həʊ.ni.əm] I'm trying to think of morphemes that contain non-initial ...

Isn't the rounding distinction somewhat neutralised in the centre ...

What's the motivation for ɚ in AmE squirrel (whether one syllable or two)? In BrE, squirrel patterns with other words containing ambisyllabic r between ɪ and ə, e.g. mirror, syrup, chirrup, stirrup.

Reusable coffee containers are as common as muck here; what's unusual is one which so closely apes the appearance of a disposable coffee cup. This, for example, is the design of the one I have: [img] As you can see, it has all the same components as your cup, but the "sleeve" on it isn't ...

Children and old people are also interesting because they're distinct from grown up's in how they think or are thought to think but probably do not actually think. That's interesting! I'd like to hear more detail about that. What are ways what those groups are 'thought to think, but probably do not...

Let's start with a random sentence from the Hobbit then: As they sang the hobbit felt the love of beautiful things made by hands and by cunning and by magic moving through him, a fierce and a jealous love, the desire of the hearts of dwarves. Aha, very interesting! You're right that the comparative sentence was confusing me.

What distinguishes ya and ye? Are there other particles that describe noun relationships?

This is a great read, really interesting! Thanks for sharing. I'm curious how speakers would describe a motion event with attention to the path or route, since you say the motion verbs are punctual, and boundary crossing verbs are instantaneous. So for e.g. "We traveled through the forest"...
