Re: If natlangs were conlangs
Malagasy. Oh, Malagasy. Seven deictic degrees of distance. Seven. Really, seven? Seven??? Who needs seven?????? Um, you also mark visibility and invisibility on your demonstratives in addition to the seven degrees of distance? Couldn't you have encoded that somewhere in the deictic distinctions that...

Re: Confusing headlines
Silly one, but I managed to get garden-pathed by the following sentence from this Wikipedia article:
Slicing the bamboo shoots thinly assists in this leaching.

Re: Tehemne mythology (even angstier somehow)
Thanks for the questions! I notice you use the word "god" for both male and female deities... of the nine, how many are male and how many are female? Can they appear as both? IIt's a pretty even split in this version (mid-northern coastal) of the mythology: Male: Teteieb, Luamanh, Síwa, He...

Re: Tehemne mythology (even angstier somehow)
The Three Exiles The three exiled gods felt their separation from Ausheninh from the moment they arrived in the discarded worlds. These crudely carved worlds were so like Ausheninh, and had been made from the same vision. But all of them had fallen short and had been cast aside. The gods saw both t...

Re: Dream sharing thread
I was showing a young Japanese couple around Kobe. We got onto the topic of the importance of eating a healthy diet with lots of vegetables, and I said that vegetables are great, but sometimes I want ice cream. This made them want ice cream, so I brought them to a restaurant named "The Mix"...

I don't remember very much of this one, but: I cracked an egg and dropped it on the ground, and the raw egg on the ground grew and grew until it was about the size of a large, flat dog. The yolk was its head, and it started chasing people so it could consume them.

Re: Tehemne mythology (now with more drama)
Is the moral "Don't fuck up?" I mean, that's not a terrible moral. :P But no—the Tehemne actually specifically avoid ascribing morals to the gods or their actions. As far as they're concerned, the immortal residents of Ausheninh, the perfect world, will necessarily have very different pri...

Re: Tehemne mythology (now with more drama)
Poor Pánimnas. I already am biased against the six gods. Well, if you look at it from their perspective, Pánimnas fucked up in the first place by creating humans, and then she compounded the fuckup by stealing the light and making the sun. If she hadn't made the initial fuckup, there would have bee...

Re: Telpahké: the thread - Some questions answered
1) Knitting, nalbinding, felting and so on are all techniques known , as they exist in Adeia. Native fabrics, however, are exclusively produced on a loom. 2) Yes. The spinning wheel was first developed in Rascana about five centuries ago. The Tarì term is ṣakkhà , which was in turn borrowed as Telp...

Re: Tehemne mythology
The Creation of the Sun and Moon Once, light shone only on Ausheninh. Even the stars loved this land so much that they drew near so as to illuminate the land more closely and fill it always with warmth and light. The discarded worlds were dark and cold. They had nothing but the castaway light of th...

Re: Telpahké: the thread - Clothing
I appreciate the level of detail you've put into this; it's done really well, and is inspiring me to continue working on my own worldbuilding! Since you're on the topic of clothing, I have some very specific questions about textiles (a personal interest!) among the Impar, which you may feel free to ...

Re: Tehemne mythology
This kind of myth is common among non-cannibal people too. I think you guys are reading too much into the story. :) They're not necessarily reading too much into the story, but they're reading very different things from what the Tehemne read into the story. :P Next one coming shortly. I'm focusing ...

Re: Tehemne mythology
The Tehemne are early agriculturalists who subsist largely on a grain similar to maize, supplemented with copious hunting and gathering. This story is used to explain the questions of "why do we eat so much grain?" and "why do we wear clothing?". The grain, they say, is because ...

Re: Tehemne mythology
Here's the creation of humanity myth. It's a short one, and is Exhibit A in Pánimnas being, of all the gods, an absolute chronic fuckup. The Creation of Humanity One day, Pánimnas was wandering through the grassy foothills of Mount Tehei by the sea, and she became hungry. She took a rock from the ea...

Re: Tehemne mythology
This is a language board. Prepare to get sidetracked :) Is it actually using a Latin orthography? If not, I suggest doing a one-to-one transcription of the native orthography. I like this story and am looking forward to the next installment! Thanks! There is no native orthography. The Tehemne have ...

Re: Tehemne mythology
I prefer the aesthetic of using <h>. I should have clarified more: stress is (often) antepenultimate in words of three or more syllables, and initial in words of three or less. This is not actually the rule (it's more complex than that) but it's a decent rule of thumb. I'm not ready to make a specif...

Tehemne mythology (meet the áhash!)
So I've been writing a NaNoWriMo novel (and failing miserably, but whatever) based on the mythology of the Tehemne people, who are one of the indigenous groups of the central northeastern Eresian Isles. I've been doing lots of other worldbuilding related to the Tehemne, but I just wanted to show off...

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
Anxiety is like that; it took me several years to do something about it, too. It would jump on me without warning and lay me helpless for days afterwards. However, thanks to a few months of CBT (*not* that, stop giggling) and fluoxetine, I've been rid of it for five years now. So will you! Hope so....
