Re: Jeffrey's Langmaker book

Right now, I'm trying to spend 6 months without buying anything from Amazon. The 6 months will be over in April, and as soon as that's the case, my plan is to buy the book and make it what might end up as my only Amazon purchase this year. Looking forward to it!

Re: Random Thread

Was unsure for a moment whether to post this here or in the Linguistic Miscellany thread, but decided that it's not language-centered enough... Does anyone else find it a bit weird how North American English uses the phrase "The Mob" to describe organized crime? When I think of a "mob...

Re: Not in my dialect (words with different meanings)

In German, a filled doughnut without a hole (like a Polish pączek) is usually called a Berliner . Except in Berlin, where it is called a Pfannkuchen . Outside of Berlin that is a pancake , while actual pancakes are called Eierkuchen egg cakes in Berlin. Is that still the case today? I know it was t...

Oddly enough, the BBC had their own interesting headline about apparently the same story:

Re: IMO if there are any discussions of Zompist's Aging post, they should have their own thread

Ok, this is only tangentially related to the post, but still - it feels pretty silly to me now that I'm about to turn 38, but I first started to feel old at 24. That was probably one of the main causes of my first serious period of depression. I really believed at the time that only young people can...

Re: Confusing headlines

From the Guardian:

Mike and Annie Cannon-Brookes pledge $12m to supply solar systems for disaster relief

Sure, by my and most people's standards, $12m is a lot of money, but I doubt that it would be enough to buy an entire solar system, let alone several ones...

Re: The New ZBB Quote Thread

According to a rough estimate by some people at the New York Times, perhaps about 750 million people in China are currently under some sort of domestic lockdown. I.e., 10% of all living humans are now under a lockdown with the intention of stopping a virus epidemic. It sounds like the type of notif...

Wo sind unsere Deutschsprachler? Ich bin sicher, dass "in vier von fünf dieser Sprachen" nicht richtig ist. Where are our German-speakers? I am sure, that "in vier von fünf dieser Sprachen" is not right. "in vier von fünf dieser Sprachen" ist vollkommen in Ordnung - ok...

I just got a new external hard drive - a WD Elements 4 TB. I'm generally happy with it, but I have a question, and I wonder if some of the tech-savvier people among you might be able to answer it. You see, in addition to the sockets for the USB plug and the power plug, it has a mysterious third open...

Re: Elections in various countries

Oh, and I should probably report that the woman whom Angela Merkel had wanted to succeed her, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (AKA AKK), has resigned as formal chairperson of her party, probably because of widespread discontent with her among the party's base. Does that mean (as I've heard) that Merkel ...

Re: Not in my dialect (words with different meanings)

Generally, in German, "Markt" means a market. But today I learned that in Bavaria, Austria, and South Tyrol, it also means a municipality that historically used to be a market town. That seems pretty weird to me.
