Vijay wrote: Wed Aug 28, 2019 11:08 am How do you say it in German?
"Ich habe mich vertreten."

Not sure about the proper linguistic analysis of that. The prefix "ver-" often, including in this case, means doing something in a wrong way, and "treten" means "to step" or "to kick".

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread

How do you call it in English when you try to take a step, and your foot somehow comes down wrong, and, as a result, something in your foot hurts for a while? "To twist one's ankle"? Colloquially, my ‘lect and every ‘lect I remember ever hearing, says “I twisted my ankle”. Formally/techni...

Re: British Politics Guide

Conservative former Prime Minister Sir John Major has declared he will if necessary take the current Prime Minister to court to prevent the prorogation. Hm? How would that work, and how would he try to make it work? The Queen's actions (qua monarch) cannot be challenged in court. However, she acts ...

Re: What are you reading, watching and listening to? - All languages

I've started Margaret O'Mara's much-discussed The Code: Silicon Valley and the Remaking of America . It's quite interesting, and well-written. At the same time, it's apparently not quite what some of the people recommending it claim it to be. For instance, right in the introduction, there's this par...

Also, they're sending me a refund check for the balance (all of which will go towards paying my home insurance). So I'm like, "Yay, money!" but also like "WTF are you sending a check for?" I have a checking account with this bank; why don't they just direct deposit the money the...

The poster of Nighthawks that I ordered has arrived in the mail! Now I can make a pathetic attempt at making my room look like the room of someone who's a bit more sophisticated than I actually am!

Re: British Politics Guide

Yep. Brexit looks like a damn good way of being forced to adopt the Euro. Oh, that seems unlikely to me. I don't think Denmark and Sweden would stand for that. What seems more likely would be various forces within the EU blocking the UK from being readmitted on any terms, either because they are le...

I think I remember seeing reports about something earlier today, but I can't find these reports, and I can't find independent confirmation anywhere. The something in question is that supposedly, some people in the Labour Party are planning to try to unilaterally repeal Brexit after it happened , onc...
