Re: Confusing headlines
According to fivethirtyeight: Some of those candidates, including author Marianne Williamson, Miramar, Florida, Mayor Wayne Messam and retired Alaska Sen. Mike Gravel, could end up qualifying for the debates I don't know who Miramar is, but if the whole of Florida is running for President I think t...

Re: Elections in various countries
Really? Sounds a bit strange to me, but I don't know much about plane maintenance. Could you elaborate? Or are you being sarcastic? During maintenance, things are often taken apart and put back together. Unfortunately, sometimes, they aren't put back together properly. A change of shift during main...

Re: Elections in various countries
Well, you see, the plane was about to fly back to its home base from the place where it had just undergone maintenance . Isn't that the most dangerous time to fly a generally well-maintained aircraft? Really? Sounds a bit strange to me, but I don't know much about plane maintenance. Could you elabo...

Re: Elections in various countries
Out of curiosity - has any news outlet from outside Germany reported anything about the whole VIP-planes-falling-apart saga? (For those of you who haven't heard of it yet, the part of the German air force that's in charge of flying politicians from A to B and back seems to have serious problems with...

Re: British Politics Guide
[Sadiq, Ed Balls, Farage, John Major, David Blunkett, Paddy Ashdown and Ruth Davidson fill out the top ten - notably, Balls, Major, Blunkett and Ashdown are all retired from politics. How much of Ed Balls' approval comes from people who like him because he has a funny name? (Don't get me wrong; the...

Re: British Politics Guide
So May has officially asked for a extension until June 30. ... which would mean that the UK will take part in the upcoming European Parliament elections, which may take up the character of an informal second Brexit referendum. I expect the Brexiteers to boycott that election because according to th...

Re: British Politics Guide
My guess is more like the economic situation of the first years after World War 2 (which, for the information of American readers, pretty much sucked pretty much anywhere in Europe, even in Britain).

Re: Elections in various countries
Didn't someone once state that there is no perfect electoral system, because any possible one will have some downsides that others won't have?

Re: British Politics Guide
First Cabinet member has resigned over May's offer to talk things through with Corbyn. In other news, British soldiers in Kabul have been caught on camera using pictures of Corbyn as targets for shooting practise. By now, pretty much everyone here should have noticed that I'm no fan of Corbyn, but t...

Re: British Politics Guide
Not to mention that the election campaign would take six weeks, and there would probably be a no-deal Brexit at some time during these six weeks.

Re: Incatena planetary settlement
Of course the really curious bit about the Incatena is that Mars’ surface is still barely inhabitable after 3,000-odd years, but New Bharat, settled a mere century ago, has a breathable if slightly corrosive atmosphere that humans can live on. Perhaps New Bharat was more human-friendly in the first...

Re: British Politics Guide
Oh, and the local party organization of Dominic Grieve, a Tory MP who had opposed Brexit, has passed a motion of no confidence in him. The Times reports that Theresa May has said that he won't be deselected anyway. Err, does she get to decide that?
