Re: British Politics Guide
After general elections in the UK, are there classes or workshops or something for newly elected MPs where they can learn how to make the sounds that UK MPs who aren't currently speaking make during debates?

Re: British Politics Guide
Raab just said that "anger is not a strategy". Fair point, but pretty weird for a Tory Brexiteer of all people to say that.

Re: British Politics Guide
Specifically, ERG's response? Their deputy chairman, Steve Baker (who basically seems like the steady governing hand behind Rees Mogg's flamboyant PR) has described himself as "consumed with a ferocious rage" tonight. He's from the right wing of a right-wing political party. Is there ever...

Completely unrelated: Are there direct or indirect loanwords from Latin in Modern Greek, and if so, how many? i think so, yes. Greek tries its hardest to come up with new words out of native stock ... panepistimio etc ,,,, but has some loans from Latin that came in at a time when they werent as pro...

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
After not working for two days, my landline internet and phone are up and running again. So that's something I'm happy about. Yay! But when I think about what exactly had been wrong and how I solved it, partly with the help of customer service people and partly by figuring stuff out on my own, I hav...

Latest on Brexit: in the middle of the night, the EU has agreed to move the Brexit date to May 22nd if the British Parliament agrees to the Deal, and April 12th if it doesn't.

I don't know enough about him to tell, but I remember people whose judgment I usually trust claiming that both the government and the opposition in Venezuela are very bad.

I don't know whether Iran 1953 counts as "subtle", but it was apparently fairly complex. (As for Venezuela today, there don't seem to be any good options, since pretty much everyone in Venezuelan politics seems to be very horrible. But perhaps that could be debated in the "Elections i...

Re: Happy things thread!
I've noticed that for quite a while now, I've usually been able to get out of the bed in the morning, not too long after my alarm rings. For pretty much all my adult life, and my teenage life before that, that has been near impossible for me. So that's good news.

Re: British Politics Guide
The people I think of when I think of the term "anti-imperialist" are perfectly happy with deriding any and all criticism of dictators who are politically at odds with the West as imperialist propaganda, and any and all opposition movements and figures in countries ruled by dictators who ...

In other news, May just made a short TV speech in which, if I parsed it correctly, she said basically nothing at all (except maybe summing up what everyone already knew).

Re: British Politics Guide
From a pure party political view, surrendering to TM doesn't look attractive if you think you can make her and the Conservatives own the mess they created. Of course, doing so does potentially make you look petty and not very statesmanlike. Another thing: The more people there are in the world to w...

Re: British Politics Guide
Oh. Now Emmanuel Macron has apparently said that he'll oppose any Brexit extension in the Council of the European Union. Which, if I understand the way the Council of the European Union works correctly, means that there won't be any Brexit extension. So that's that, then.
