Re: The Computer And General Tech Thread - Software, Hardware, Questions, etc.

I only have Tales of Symphonia, which is my best game. Besides that I've only played Tales of the Abyss at a friend's place. Oh, I recently saw an anime about game development, called New Game. The game they were making seemed like it was mock version* of a Tales game. Or maybe it was just a JRPG in...

Re: Texts in bradrn’s conlangs

The story ends with a comparative, literally ‘your strength leaves/surpasses me’. Perhaps surprisingly, this is not an SVC: the construction involves an adjective converted to an inalienably possessed quality noun, which is said to ‘leave’ (alternately ‘surpass’) another’s quality. How can one see ...

Re: Texts in bradrn’s conlangs

I didn’t know that — sounds interesting! Do you know of anything I can read about the syntax of Japanese ideophones? I don't know any good sources unfortunately. Off the top of my head: Ideophones may appear as interjections They may appear in adverb position, optionally followed by the quotative p...

Re: The Computer And General Tech Thread - Software, Hardware, Questions, etc.

Hmm... What program are you editing the html file in? Is there an option for character encoding, either in some menu or in the save dialog, that says something like "UTF-8" or "UTF-8 with BOM"? If so, make sure UTF-8 with BOM is selected. Some programs don't read Unicode correct...

Re: Word assimilation survey *FINISHED*

I've been trying to work out exact rules for assimilation, using the data I got. This is what I've got: 1. Replace phonemes with letters according to the phoneme replacement list for the given language, or according to the general rules if there is no list. 2. If there is any R word-finally, or foll...

Re: Word assimilation survey

What does bug me is it's in all caps; i feel like i'm being yelled at or i'm reading a spam email. Yeah, that was to hide the proper nouns , but it turns out this was difficult enough already. >_< Don't be so hard on yourself. Most of these weren't too bad, and vocab is just part of learning a lang...

Re: Word assimilation survey

C stands for /tʃ/ I think this is unadvisable — it's /k~s/ (or /k~s̪/ or /k~θ/, depending on dialect) in both English and Spanish, and I think Mandarin uses it for /tsʰ/; these aren't languages whose orthographies I think it advisable to make a potential learner fight. Also, I just kind-of hate usi...

Re: Word assimilation survey *FINISHED*

I constructed the survey quite poorly, but it's too late to do anything about that now. I will now analyze the data I got. Hopefully I can get some insights from it. For those who are interested in knowing, here are the correct words: 1. SETRANTE strand 2. TERIK trick 3. URETU Urdu 4. SEPRUS spruce ...

Re: The Computer And General Tech Thread - Software, Hardware, Questions, etc.

No, it's Tales of Phantasia — the original version, though I've played both the GBA and PS1 versions, and loved both very much (note I am the clearly JRPG-influenced one); I was surprised by the low price. Apparently, they made a *LOT* of Japanese copies of a *LOT* of things, so the prices aren't p...

Re: The Computer And General Tech Thread - Software, Hardware, Questions, etc.

But the other problem is that Japanese text and ÅÄÖ get replaced by random strings. Is there some way to define encoding in the file, or should I give up on this? After the <head> line, put: <meta charset="utf-8"> Thanks for the reply. I tried this now, but it made no difference. :|

What?? I thought pharyngeals had the same effect as uvulars; that vowels lower and/or back near them.

This seems to not get any more replies, so I'll close the survey. Unless I can get one more answer in today? I'll notify here when I've finished counting all the answers and definitely will not count any more.

Re: Katapharteo: an engelang with only one type of syntactic relation and roots that conjugate in base four

That's a really interesting conlang idea. I just think the phonology is really difficult. You've got initial clusters that begin with /r/ and /x/, and /s/ followed by affricates. For removing a vowel quality I would suggest nasalization, because you already decided to not distinguish it in every env...

I should also do some work about onomatopoeia.

The stuff about subordinators and fractions could've used some example sentences, but the rest looks good.
