Re: Challenge - can you understand this IAL text?
the padre nuestro thing is commonly used to test drive conlangs and, well, it was in verse. Huh, I was unaware of this. I think that the approach of having a set of languages one borrows from in order to make an IAL easy to understand prior to knowing it is probably only going to work if a) your se...

Re: Poll about a possible conscript
I vote circle for p because it's bouba, triangle for t and square for k because k is "duller" than t, so the pointier shape should go to t.

Re: Challenge - can you understand this IAL text?
I've made a graph to get a better overview of how many words each language has. The gray scale bars show how big a share each language had of the words in the three texts, with the black bar showing data for all three texts added together. The magenta bars show how much of the entire dictionary (as ...

Re: Challenge - can you understand this IAL text?
I'll post a little statistics about the languages occurring in the texts. Here's about the first text: Language (abbreviation) no. of occurrences/total no. of words = per cent Akan (AK) 5/368 = 1,4% Ancient Greek (AGR) 4/368 = 1,1% Bambara (BM) 10/368 = 2,7% Bengali (BN) 6/368 = 1,6% Burmese (MY) 12...

Re: Challenge - can you understand this IAL text?
Thanks for playing everyone. Any additional tries are still welcome.
I've come to the conclusion that I need to be even more careful when choosing which language to borrow a given word from, and avoid those options that would result in quite an unrecognizable word.

Re: Challenge - can you understand this IAL text?
initally, solid zero after a bit, in text 3 i feel as if i can guess a few things, maybe up to a 1 or 2... are we talking about alcoholic drinks and rice in japan? gohan and sake suggests so. Yes, but gohan and sake are not actual words in this language; they were present already in the original En...

Re: Challenge - can you understand this IAL text?
Hm, I recognize a few words. Mostly the last text, I recognized Nihogistan almost immediately, so I could make out a few words in that text. The other two I can't understand. omnis looks like it should be 'all', alam could be 'world'. Now that we know what the second text is, I'll try and decipher ...

Re: Challenge - can you understand this IAL text?
Familiar-sounding words may be deceptive. For instance, there is a Finnish surname Aaltonen which sounds just like German Aaltonnen 'eel kegs', but of course has nothing to do with either eels or kegs. Rather, it appears to be Aalto , which is also a Finnish surname, with the suffix -nen found in v...

Re: Challenge - can you understand this IAL text?
I guessed basically nothing, except: Text 2 looks like it's the beginning of the "Hobbit"; hopit is the giveaway, and then things I expected come along, like the repetition of "hole". Continuing to guess would have felt like cheating because I know the text. That's correct. I wa...

Oh, and you can discuss things with each other if you want. But please use the [morə] tags when you refer to words in Omni-kan, in case there's someone who wants to make guesses without any spoilers.

Challenge - can you understand this IAL text?
I've kept working with my conlang Omni-kan and have finally translated three texts into it. All the words have been borrowed from natlangs and I want to test how much you can understand without much/any prior knowledge of the language. (Allthough I'm not expecting very good results.) So if you want ...
