Re: An IAL

Oh, I see. Btw, are you doing anything with proper nouns, or is everything just gonna be the same as in the original language?

Re: A little dabbling in Japonic

Cooking seems to be as mismashed as anything you might find in a developed country today (characters mention eating quiches, stir-fries, "stacktoast" — had to invent a new word for "sandwich on toast", "potatoes Kokori" ("French fries"), and some sort of toma...

Re: A little dabbling in Japonic

The definite forms tend to feel very Japanese, I think, while the Indefinite forms seem a bit more... Persian...? French? some sort of oddly soft Germanic? I think almost everything sounds very Japanese, with a few words here and there looking like some vague kind of 外国語. So you've really managed t...

Re: A little dabbling in Japonic

This was not an alt-Earth language, or was it? So are you gonna use the kanji as is, or will you make up your own characters with a one-to-one correspondence?

Re: Omni-kan syntax

Alright, now I've got my notes. I didn't include any tense or aspect stuff in the sentences I wrote earlier, because I haven't completed that stuff yet. My clear sentences have that, but you can just as well imagine everything being in simple present tense. The snake that the cat is fighting jumped....

Re: An IAL

Even though topicality can be expressed by passive voice, a topic distinct from the subject can also be expressed by placing the topic before the subject, and then placing si in its original location later in the sentence. This is a really nice idea. The Japanese would be using it all the time, whi...

sipan tikin saysa kinta sipan mirya twa tikin tari seven ten six hundred seven thousand two ten three "32767" I find this really confusing tbh. I mean, I understand your description, but if I had to produce large numbers I would be like "how did you do this again?" every time. A...

Re: An IAL

Inspired by some other users here, I have decided to create an IAL of my own for the hell of it. :!: There is a distinction between active and passive voice, where passive voice is marked by using a main verb with passive meaning, such as risa "receive", which may be either followed by an...

Re: Omni-kan syntax

Why not just go with ‘all nouns, always optional’? Yes, it’s less common and (slightly) less expressive, but it has the advantage that both people whose native language has number and people whose native language doesn’t will make grammatical sentences from the start. Because us westerners will int...

Kuchigakatai wrote: Fri Jan 15, 2021 3:19 pmand I recall there are languages (in India? I don't remember) where the singular noun form is used with all numbers,
I know. Finnish does this. So that's why I chose to make it optional when used together with numerals; the meaning will remain unambiguous.

Re: Omni-kan syntax

Either way, I don't think Westerners doing without plural-ness would be so difficult, either. Hmm, I'll check which one is more common worldwide, to have obligatory plurals or not. WALS has three relevant maps. The most comprehensive is 33A , which lists 968 languages with some sort of nominal plur...

Relative clauses I'm looking through ways one could form relative clauses. To check one idea, I would like to ask everyone to tell how they interpret the following sentences. Just rewrite the sentences in normal English please. 1) snake jump cat fight 2) cat jump hiss 3) I see snake cat fight 4) ca...

Not actually a headline, but I'll post it anyway. My new pair of jeans have a tag that says in Swedish that it's not of animal origin. "Oh, that's good", I thought. But then I noticed the tag said the complete opposite in other languages. I had to read the Swedish sentence several times be...

Re: Omni-kan syntax

Kuchi: That reminds me, recently I've observed a lot of Asians on YouTube pluralizing uncountable nouns. >_< It seems like there is no really good option to go with. Also, I don't quite know what to do with mass nouns. Should I say that this conlang has nouns that can't be pluralized? But then how w...
