Re: Conlang template
Looks good so far! (Though I have some comments, as usual.) One improvement you might make: a lot of languages have minimal word sizes, often described in terms of morae Oh yeah. I don't know what to do with that. :| Is there actual information about this anywhere? Even so, I believe languages with...

Re: Romanization Challenge Thread v2.0
You mean low volume? Yes. Ah, yeah. Recording yourself is so hard. I always get so inhibited. I’d call that POA ‘subapical alveolar.’ Not sure about the MOA, but clicks can be remarkably forceful if you do them right. (I saw a lovely video of this a while ago, but I can’t seem to find it now...

Re: Romanization Challenge Thread v2.0
I’m not entirely sure what they are, though they sound click-like. I used to think so too! But people kept saying they were ejectives. It doesn’t help that the recording is very soft You mean low volume? One question: how exactly do you produce those sounds? Or are you not sure? For C 1 the tip of ...

Re: Romanization Challenge Thread v2.0
/koC 2 oɬɦuʐ/ I hope it's okay if I post this here all of a sudden. I took a look at an old conlang of mine that I haven't worked on in years. Oh, it's bad! >.< There's a lot of good ideas there, but it's so poorly conlanged. The orthography is also bad. So I thought I'd post the phoneme inventory ...

Hmm, maybe I'll try solving Quinterbeck's cypher first, because it seems easier. And then try this.

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread
I counted the syllables shown in Wikipedia's Pinyin table article: 417 possible syllables in total.* This is pretty interesting because if you multiply that times 4 or 5 tones, you get 1668 or 2065 syllables. I've sometimes come across a claim that Mandarin dictionaries list words using about ~1300...

Re: Another decryption challenge (hopefully easier)
Aha! I counted only two instances of u that are not word-initial. This is a vowel carrier with inherent /a/!

Re: Another decryption challenge (hopefully easier)
Hmm, I checked and E does not occur word-finally unless it is preceded by T. What suffix is really common in English? I was thinking -ed, but I was assuming E stands for a consonant. Maybe vowels aren't always diacritics? I'm reasonably certain that w and u are the articles: a and the (I don't know ...

...it's important to take also word order into account when determining the conlang's alignment. True, but alignment isn't an all-or-nothing thing, of course. You can ergative marking and accusative syntax, for instance. Ever since I read the Typology of Ergativity by Mcgregor (it's getting harder ...

Re: Conlang template
I wrote about syllable numbers a little while ago, after all. Now, in this text I'm talking about things that I don't actually know that well, and making claims that I can't back up. But what better way to get answers than by posting the wrong answers online. ;) 1.2 Number of syllables per word root...

Re: Conlang template
The main reference grammar template that I’m aware of is the Lingua Questionnaire , an amazingly thorough set of questions covering pretty much every aspect of grammar. man, this is cool enough that it might just make me get back into building conlangs. Glad I could help! Though I find it hard to s...

Ergative alignment ↗Ergativity for Novices In ergative (or ergative-absolutive) alignments S is marked the same way as O. If the language has case, then this is the absolutive case. A is marked differently, and for cased languages this would be the ergative case. If only word order is used for mark...

Re: Self phonetic survey
This is each vowel quality regardless of length and stress. We can see that some vowels have quite a lot of variation, while others have much less. The weird thing is that /ø/ overlaps with /y/, and /o/ with /u/. :? I think this is common in languages where the mid vowels are high-mid. IIRC, F3 is ...
