Re: Kisimbi Thread: Noun Classes
NOUN CLASSES Like most if not all Bantu languages, Kisimbi has a number of noun classes; in holding with its generally conservative nature, it has preserved all nineteen accepted noun classes from Proto-Bantu. This functions not only as a means of classifying nouns, but also as a derivational proce...

Re: The Dwarves of Discworld
I don't remember anything about a journey through the underworld. And as for worldbuilding, I think the Discworld canon is expansive enough to find something that fits. Considering the English, maybe he was saying ‘Oh dear’ in all the other languages, and he wasn’t translating exactly. I believe th...

Re: The Dwarves of Discworld
Alright, alright, this does seem to follow something of a pattern. Perhaps not as cut-and-dry a pattern as Khuzdul, but a pattern nonetheless. The question is, what do the b’zugdoids actually mean? I don’t think they actually mean anything in particular — I’ve been interpreting them as just noun co...

Re: Kisimbi Thread: A Pseudo-Bantu Language
Nice map .... is nationstates doing that now or is that yours? Either way, the landmasses are so huge that I don't know which side is the water.... I'm guessing Usimbi is on the west coast of a big landmass, not the east coast of an even bigger one. (Wait no... I see it now... it's the east coast a...

Kisimbi Thread: The Syllabary; Numbers
This is perhaps my one attempt in recent years at making an a posteriori conlang, in this case from the Bantu language family. Naturally, I wouldn’t make a language without a place for its speakers to live, and it just so happens that I do have one--an old NationStates country of mine. And so, ladie...

Re: Ankoseiwas Thread: Seasons and Safety
Flowers with both sex organs are called "perfect flowers" or "bisexual" and plants with only perfect flowers are called "hermaphrodite". Plants with a mix of sexual flowers are called "monoecious". So you could adopt monoecious and I also think while there ar...

Re: The Dwarves of Discworld
I've found another sample of Kad’k which Pedant missed, from Maskerade , when the interpreter starts babbling in multiple languages: Oh dear ... Ai! Meu Deus! Dio Mio! O Goden! D’zuk f’t! Aagorahaa! (Emphasis not from the original.) If nothing else, this gives some more evidence to Salmoneus’s b’zu...

Re: Ankoseiwas Thread: Seasons and Safety
Good stuff, Pedant. Many thanks! Just two points: First, the last place I want to be during a typhoon is a (presumably shoddy wooden or bamboo) house on stills. True, I have a fear of heights but still. Do they not come crashing down with major wind gusts? The higher they are, the more vulnerable t...

Re: The Dwarves of Discworld
I prefer using * rgξga - there's no need to randomly insert an intensive where it isn't present semantically. (And I realise I was the one who was originally guilty of this.) I also don't think you need a 'no identical syllables' rule - possibly there is a formal register of Kad'k which uses * grag...

Re: The Dwarves of Discworld
I think you've misinterpreted my argument a bit: * ξ was not meant to be an infix, but rather just the first phoneme of a word * ξaY , meaning "person". Then * rkξaY was a compound word "mineshaft+person". On the other hand, I do think your theory is better than mine, in that it...

Some more observations/theories: Kruk “dwarf mining law; laws of ownership, marriage laws, inheritance, rules for dealing with disputes of all kinds” Grag “dwarfish religious leader” Y’grad (noun--possibly a ceremony) I can't believe I missed this before, but I think that at least the first two wor...

Re: Icemannish Thread: Sails and Skins
Interesting, thanks. I don’t have as much to say as with the earlier posts, but I read it and enjoyed it. I’m very glad to hear it! I’m just curious, since you've described two different things as flying whales now, are they related? One was an animal and the other is a boat ... so is the boat name...

Re: The Dwarves of Discworld
Thanks Pedant! How did you find all these? Two to three hours' worth of sifting through the books...but by gods was it worth it. (Also the stories are never bad to go through; I confess to stopping and reading a few choice paragraphs now and again, which might have slowed me down a little.) Feet of...

Re: The Dwarves of Discworld
Guys, use the context. It's a parodic fantasy language; the apostrophes are clearly ornamental, the way they would be in a boilerplate Paolini-style fantasy dwarf tongue. If you can't lean into this you'll drive yourselves crazy. Perhaps the apostrophe is a dash of textual aesthetics by the dwarves...

Re: The Dwarves of Discworld
The Discworld wiki likely has a more complete list of vocabulary here: https://wiki.lspace.org/mediawiki/Dwarfish_phrases Let us never forget my personal favorite Dwarfish phrase, k'ez'rek d'b'duz 'go around the other side of the mountain', Granny Weatherwax's Dwarfish name. Many thanks! And anothe...
