Re: The Dwarves of Discworld
It's been a while since I read Thud , which I assume is where most of the Dwarvish vocabulary would be from, but I don't remember much Dwarvish being written in its native tongue. We're far more likely to hear calques, like "Head Scraper" or whatever he's called. You’d be surprised...ther...

The Dwarves of Discworld
Just to be safe! I’m a huge fan of Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series, and one of the things that struck me growing up was the language Kad’k, spoken by the dwarves of that world. I think there’s enough material to create an actual conlang, but I wanted to be sure that nobody’s tried to do it be...

On Benśentin
The way the benśentin is described in the Almeopedia as “a yearly holiday...on which all laws were reversed, and blasphemy, disorder, and insubordination ruled.” Now, there seems to be some similarity with the Roman Saturnalia, but the description here seems...a little more extreme, something more l...

Re: Ankoseiwas Thread: Seasons and Safety
This one's for you, Raholeun. Hope it's what you meant! SEASONS AND SAFETY: AVOIDING CLIMATE DISASTER IN AKOTVYAH The archipelago as a whole recognizes three seasons, each corresponding to about a third of the year. The sãyo (hot-and-dry season) takes place in our equivalent of September-to-November...

Re: Passol : a metafictional conlang.
An interesting concept indeed! But one has to ask: is the language completely a priori ? If so, how did Audimahan convince anyone to learn it beyond pushing it as a mere curiousity? Did the language not change as it passed from station to station through the mouths of only a few speakers? Looking fo...

Re: On The Ezičimi and The Elements
Ezičimi religion was family-based, so there wasn't as much elaboration of magic. The elements were key to thinking about the gods: imagining their nature, finding pointers to their presence, decorating their shrines, doing rituals and magic. There were likely to be half-crazy lone 'priests' with th...

Re: On The Ezičimi and The Elements
Eh, fair. So how would the nomads have used the elements in combination with the deities before the fusion, do you reckon? The magic system seems to rely on a fusion of the element and the totem animal; would there have been similar beliefs among the Ezičimi (that the raw elements provided powers, l...

On The Ezičimi and The Elements
In the article on Mešaism there is a line thus: In the early days the Wede:i gods had totems, and the Ezičimi gods elements; the fused gods had both. Further up the page there is a list of the major deities, all of whom are assigned (naturally) a specific element alongside their totem animal. What i...

Re: Tehemne mythology (meet the áhash!)
I'm wondering what happened to his limbs for some reason. The implication seems to be that either the áhash ate them and gave the man a hallucination of wonderful food, or fed him his own limbs until the point where he could be drawn in to be properly devoured. ...either way, I’d go easy on the stew.

Ajjamah Scratchpad: Kaadhral, Pt. I
The Salvian, Icemannic, and Ankoseiwas threads all feature languages (and language families) found on this world. Other cultures and languages I shall describe in some level of detail; if anyone's interested in anything in particular I'll see about making them their own threads. Races: The Ashenacom...

Re: Salvian Thread: The Omiri Delta and Nominal Declension
This was annoying to write, not because there's anything particularly frustrating in it, but because halfway through I clicked on another page and deleted everything. Ah, well...anyway, an overview of the Omiri River Delta, the location where my story actually takes place, and a note or two on Salvi...

Re: Tehemne mythology (last part of Pánimnas's story up now)
There's the last of that story, so now I can get it out of my head. Re: mythology, I'll soon(-ish) be putting up some stories about the Áhash, which are a race of innumerable lesser gods who in practice play a much greater role in practical Tehemne cosmology than the Halxeida (the nine I've been ta...

But back on topic, this is interesting stuff, Pedant. Many thanks, Raholeun! Anything in particular you’d like to see more of? Re: Ankoseiwas Thread: Geography
On Geography: The islands have these kind of... filaments? Running NW to SE. I get that peninsulas exist, but the combined effect looks a little unnatural. Also I've noticed that your maps tend to have this splotchy "giraffe skin" pattern of uplands and valleys distributed evenly across t...

Re: Ankoseiwas Thread: Geography
No, I don't see a problem with that. I'm sorry this discussion has kind of taken over your thread. Ah, no worries, Vijay. Tiresians it is, then! I don't usually comment on these things, but since you specifically asked mèþru and me for feedback: The map reminds me of some islands in the Pacific Oce...

Re: Ankoseiwas Thread: Geography
OKAY everyone! Would anyone have a problem if I referred to these people as Tiresians instead of hermaphrodites, after the Greek prophet who could switch back and forth between male and female over the course of his life?
