Re: COVID-19 thread

I've been very sick for three days and though I don't think its actually the coronavirus, my parents are afraid to visit me and I'm getting a bit worried myself. If I can meet them I will have better access to food but that might not change much. This illness is mostly about vomiting but even the w...

Re: COVID-19 thread

The metaphor is unfortunate, but the main problem is it should be international, not national. I.e. not trying to get German scientists to make a vaccine exclusively for Americans.

Re: COVID-19 thread

If everything goes really well-- and that's what we should be hoping for!-- then the virus spread will be slowed down, the health care system won't be overloaded, and the global economy won't tank. And yeah, there's a political problem when disasters are consistently, competently avoided: people st...

New England Mid-Atlantic Midwest French cruller cruller (cruller?) cruller bar Long John (New England crullers are a little different from bars -- they're typically glazed as opposed to iced, and maybe made with a different dough -- but if we had NE crullers, we'd probably call them a type of bar.)...

Re: Elections in various countries

Merkel is certainly among the right-sing politicians that have improved things, even if I would still never vote for her. She's conservative, or at least right-wing, compared to modern Germany.

I watched a documentary of the Himba by Himba themselves called 'Himba are shooting'. It's so much better than many non-participative documentaries because you get a closer and more accurate view.

That's awesome! Shows how good you are at translation and how well you know Indian languages. Presumably research and/or extrapolation as well.

These are not equivalent. While the (electronic) music I like the least did not exist at the time of Mozart, the equivalent to S3RL is perhaps a gaudy pub song, not Mozart. And, while tastes will account for one's choice of Today's Mozart, nobody would say it's S2RL. In any case, I discovered this v...

Re: What language did the Bell Beaker people speak?

In cases where we can check, preliterate peoples generally don't recall the history of their region from 500 years before, much less 2000. That doesn't correspond to what I have read about Australian Aborigines: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/ancient-sea-rise-tale-told-accurately-for-10...

Wow. That's annoying. Unfortunately some people do this on the bus. How could at least play the same videos quieter.
But what does he do to wake up so late? Does he work night shift?

Ah, it seems like playing the clock, then? Or is there not even any clock, it's just for some kind of kicks?

There are some detailed arguments here, with some pause for thought. Obviously, the one I agreed with the most (Zompist’s «It's true that independence would likely cause economic problems. But so will Brexit! Scotland doesn't have a "no economic problems" route available to it. And who wou...

OK so I didn't realise that there was the earlier negotiations. That's clearly not what I'm not saying. For one, I'm not accusing anybody of being anything. I'm just putting an argument forward in favour of my case. Also, it's somewhat relative: things can be more or less easy, not just a polar extr...

@chris_notts: 1) As mentioned earlier in thread, Estonia held a referendum on EU accession in 2003 and joined in 2004. And that's with a country that was never already part of a member state. So it's certianly possible. And 2/5 of the European Union have not joined the euro. 2) In a certain sense, S...

OK, refresh my memory. Does this mean that Johnson will get his deal through parliament, or that No Deal happens on January 31? Johnson will get his deal through parliament. Not quite as bad as No Deal, but also accompanied by some new fellow travellers: https://morningstaronline.co.uk/article/b/an...
