Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread
Weirdly, pharyngeal consonant tend to trigger advancement of the vowel, not retracting it. What are some examples? This is certainly not the case in, say, Arabic or Chilcotin or Spokane, where pharyngeals/pharyngealized consonants result in vowel lowering, backing, and/or -ATR (or similar). Actuall...

Do you know any sound change applier that can handle suprasegmental phonology? (My language is tonal, and vowel dropping don't just make the tone disappear)

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread
Identical to the input or identical to the output? Vowel assimilation will make some sense almost always.* Dissimilation might be a harder sell in this case. Identical to input. And my proposal is vowel dissimilation. If it's the former, I'd go a bit further even: if you have a change like i…e > e…...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
Regularization that makes the verb less regular. Examples? Because like was explained above, most here don't think that's possible with the regular definition of regular. I'm not a linguist, but the claim that analogy makes Navajo verb system less regular is not mine. It's Leer's. This is an articl...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
The reason why I ask for using regularity is because Navajo conjugation is also formed this way. Regularization that makes the verb less regular. Or at least according to Proto-Athabaskan Verb Stem Variation by Leer.

Re: Conlang Random Thread
Do you know any way to use analogy to make the declension/conjugation less regular. My language is inspired by navajo where the ablaut is not regular at all. There is some semitic inspiration, because occassionally two vowels are mutated at once. (Usually only one vowel is mutated, because of monosy...

Unfortunately, those books aren’t freely available online, but if you can get access to them they may be worth a read. (Disclaimer: I never actually ended up reading them.) I already know that. And it's good for something that's actually attested. The problem is if the sound change is unattested, is it really unrealistic or it's actually doable.linguistcat wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2019 2:00 pm Not a book, but here is a searchable online resource someone on this board or the CBB suggested to me: here

I haven't read any of the relevant literature, but I imagine this is probably one of the hypothesis thrown around, since it's low-hanging fruit. Your language lacks /i/? I don't think it's realistic. Your /Y/ is more likely to unround instead.

Re: If natlangs were conlangs
I'm furious about the fact the Austronesian Trigger System exists, while the simpler Conlang Trigger System doesn't. It's even diachronically simpler: Initially, the word order is V nom S acc O pp N Later, one of the preposition is fused with the verb. That noun is then focused and put on the front:...
