Re: Conlang Random Thread
I wouldn't call that a passive. This is what a direct-inverse language is, so the verb would be said to be in inverse voice when it has an inanimate subject. While it corresponds to direct-inverse system in one of its descendants, it's not yet a direct-inverse now, because: The original subject is ...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
How about this. a language has 4 cases: Direct, Genitive, Locative, and Instrumental. There is also two genders, Animate and Inanimate. All The case assignment is: In an intransitive sentence, this is unambiguous. Direct case is used for the only argument. In a transitive sentence, the case assignme...

Do you think it's reasonable to turn dative to accussative if the language originally have no accussative?

Re: Relative clauses
I'm not quite sure what the question is. I discuss this quite a bit in my syntax book; you can also look at various strategies in WALS: https://wals.info/chapter/122 https://wals.info/chapter/123 For a conlang, you probably want to worry about a few things: * what exactly do you do to mark relativi...

The man whom Maria kill kattu na Maria a a-ro-gapput-a Man REL Maria 3SG.DIR 3SG>3SG-PRF-kill-DIR.SG Later, since akko refers to katta, it becomes more proximate than Maria. katta na a Maria a-ro-gappud-e Man REL 3SG.DIR Maria 3SG>3SG-gappud-INV.SG I don't quite follow this - I can't see akko in an...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
Is it reasonable that the noun that is relativized is more proximate than all other arguments except for 1st person and 2nd person? My idea is to make a diachronic for a relative pronoun. Initially, there is relativizer na. The relativizer na can be used standalone, or with a resumptive pronoun. For...

A fruit in a conworld can be named after a race, that is also a name of its language Aha. But I think this person called their ethnicity "Han". The guy who did Korean also called their ethnicity Han. You two need to sort this out. That's called exonym. It's based on malay word ment...

Re: If natlangs were conlangs
Mandarin? The trend of naming conlangs after fruit and whatever is still going? Anyhow, please don't make up your own phonetic characters (ʅ, ʯ, etc.), you can use IPA with its diacritics. I think it's the other way around. What? The name? A fruit was not named after a conlang, come on! A fruit in ...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
¿What on earth would you call a system like this: Each time a noun is introduced into a sentence the last vowel is assigned a final tone (lexically all nouns have an atonic [not neutral!] final vowel, including proper nouns), either: /˧ ˥ ˩ ˥˩/ which equate to the 'identifiers' {α β γ δ}. There 24 ...

I can't prove it, but language with subject marking usually marks it from deriving animate noun from inanimate noun.

Re: Non-verby uses of participle morphology
Indonesian is pretty much big on reusing the same affixes for different purposes. Sometimes, an affix has completely different meaning depending on the resulting word class of the word Informal Indonesian also uses ke--an circumfix for both excessive and stative verbal noun. (kebesaran = too big/big...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
I doubt there's any languages where there's literally no identifiable patterns to plural formation at all. This is the problem - it is almost completely random. There are some vague, unhelpful patterns - for instance, words ending in geminates add a vowel to form the plural (but which vowel?), and ...
