Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread
I watched this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCy12B14woM Wow, that was full of bullsh*t. The video insists that Jews are not be called "Jews". That's akin not calling Chinese as Chinese, but as "zhongguoren" I'm sure that the word is not pronounced like that. So, the vid...

Re: COVID-19 thread
My university is now all online, thanks to COVID-19. After so long time Indonesia got infection-free, now people suddenly got COVID-19. Although, I have to be suspicious as the neighbours are all infected badly.

I'm surprised I can understand Sri Lankan Malay, despite the big grammar difference. Sri Lankan Malay's grammar is like a Japanese grammar but with Malay words.

Re: Ergativity for Novices
Interestingly, an O-construction ("inverse") is only possible if the O is 3rd person or in certain morphologically limited conditions, which is not what would be expected if the purpose is to promote SAPs. I once had a conlang that works this way. I thought I misunderstand the direct-inve...

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread
On object agreement, the claim seems like complete nonsense. To start with, it ignores Arabic, which has object agreement, as did the earlier imperial languages Akkadian and Aramaic. Spoken French arguably has a verbal complex that includes object agreement— /ʒnətevypa/ "I didn't see you"...

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread
I read a paper that says that a language spoken by millions of native speakers tends to lack object agreement and applicatives. But I forgot the exact paper. Could you tell me the exact paper?

You should watch English by Phensri. It's a video about how a teacher butchers English language. Here's a link to one of the its episodes.

Also, it's worth pointing out the ergativity in English. (i.e. My reading vs Troy's destruction by the Greeks). In English, action nominals seems to have a split intransitive alignment. Compare above with "My singging the Marseillaise"

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread
Can + passive is OK (I can be persuaded). To me, it's not only OK, it's also common and quite important. However, I'm a native speaker of Indonesian, where such construction is more common. For example, this sentence is grammatical (aside of definite article, which I'm not sure): (If you go there,)...

Well, then it's just me that thinks Past Modal/must + have + been + Ving as inferential, instead of imperfective.
Also for some reason can + have is ungrammatical to me except when used as "You can have this food."

The Malagasy wiktionary is one of the best overperformers relative to its language's number of speakers On the other hand, Indonesian wiktionary is bad despite the number of speakers. First, there is no IPA given, and unfortunately Indonesia does have some of the words pronounced irregularly (altho...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
Is there any writing techniques to insert conlang to the story. My story is about a prince from a medieval kingdom (the name is to be determined). He loves hunting, but after he found an artifact, he is transported to another world. Despite coming from royalty background, he is forced to adapt to a ...
