Re: Random Thread
Heya JT! You must be, like, all old and stuff. What are you doing these days? Hey zomp! If 35 is old, then I guess I'm old? Still mostly the same (though my beard is longer). Still working on my conlangs in fits and spurts. I'm on a discord server for silly linguists, so that helps. The past year a...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
When I say 2 or 3, I'm counting the major overhauls, where I just deleted everything and started from scratch. The minor iterations are much more numerous. The language itself is...I guess you'd call it isolating? It marks most things with articles and auxiliaries instead of endings. Apart from the ...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
Is it normal to want to re-work a verb system literally every time you look at it? I've seriously re-worked the Ahnakáh verb conjugation system at least 2 or 3 times, but it's still not satisfactory. I almost want to scrap all the person endings entirely. The language really doesn't make use of affi...

What's more random than posting on a forum you haven't visited in years?
Well, technically I guess it isn't random, since it was caused by much nostalgia and conversation about conlangs..but whatever. []

Bleh...travel to England is a bit out of my budget, alas...would really like to go to a conlang event, though.

Re: Pronunciations you had to unlearn
When I first saw the word Velociraptor, I thought it was stressed on the first and fourth syllables, with the fourth syllable being the primary stress. Had to unlearn that after watching Jurassic Park . Also, for the longest time I thought the l was silent in the name Gandalf, by analogy with words ...

Re: "somewhere" vs. "someplace"
While "somewhere" is largely preferred to "someplace", "sometime" is preferred to "somewhen" which is rarely used. "Somewhen" is a word...? :? At any rate, I probably wouldn't find it remarkable if someone used the word "someplace," but I ...

Re: "somewhere" vs. "someplace"
I think I usually only hear "someplace" in the context of "someplace else," but "somewhere" works in all contexts.

Which syllable do you stress when saying "TV"? I personally always stress the second syllable, but I've heard a lot of people stress the first.

Re: SCs needed... esp. fortitions, lengthening words
Morphological rather than phonological: Chinese added clarifying morphemes to words which became homophones with each other as a disambiguation strategy I was actually thinking of something similar to that earlier today, only more due to common stock phrasings than homophone distinction. Like if th...

Re: SCs needed... esp. fortitions, lengthening words
Actually I almost forgot my favorite example ever of something that at least presents as a prothetic consonant: some gaelic varieties apparently are inserting /f/ before initial vowels as a hypercorrection of the lenition rule that sends /f/ to zero. I can't remember whether the hypercorrected word...
