Re: Conlang Random Thread
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wari’_language kinda wanna do a language with a similar vowel system... Is this a question, a comment, or simply a statement? On the other hand, that is probably the weirdest vowel system I’ve ever seen… If I hadn’t seen that page, I wouldn’t even have thought it to be...

Re: Conkey keyboard layout
There should be an equivalent Cyrillic keyboard I'm tired of having to use special characters to type in all my obscure Cyrillic letters or to combine them with (additional) diacritics I’ve never needed to type Cyrillic, so I don’t have any plans for a keyboard like that. I do believe that people h...

Re: Conkey keyboard layout
If it's aimed at conlangers, why is the IPA not included? That seems like a strange design decision to me... Good question, and one I didn’t think about in detail! However, the answer is that the IPA requires a very large range of symbols which are almost never used outside the IPA, and including a...

Re: Conkey keyboard layout
nice (: Thank you! maybe you can also aim at peoples who want to revive dying or lost language, not just conlangers I guess. Maybe… I haven’t thought about that as a goal yet. On the other hand, there’s already a sub‐keyboard for Haskell programmers, so this is certainly possible. also is it possib...

[v5.2.0 now out] Conkey keyboard layout
For about two weeks now I’ve been working on this project . It’s a keyboard layout specifically aimed at conlangers, with all the special letters, diacritics and symbols we love to use. Here’s a sample of what you can type, copied from the linked GitHub page: Nuu-Chah-Nulth ( source ): ʔUyaaƛaḥ hawi...

Re: "Pronouncing difficult sounds" thread.
I would add that AFAICT most varieties of English do not in fact pronounce [æ] but [a]. Do you have a source? That doesn’t sound quite right to me… If anything, I would think /æ/ would end up as /ɛ/ or /e/. The phonetics lab archive seems intresting though; I'll go on when I'm on a more advanced co...

Re: How to intentionally incorporate SAE features.
Phonologically, this is not SAE at all, though. Only grammar. The consonant inventory is /t k kʷ b~m d~n~r tʰ kʰ kʼ ts tɬ tɕ tsʼ tɬʼ tɕʼ s z ɬ l ɕ ʑ~j x ɣ xʷ w ʔ h/ Non-SAE grammatical features: noun incorporation is already present. I also have presented inverse marking, although working partially...

Re: "Pronouncing difficult sounds" thread.
How do you pronounce /æ/? (Note that English is not my native language.) Start with a plain /a/, then raise your tongue a bit. Small tip: On its pages for phonemes, Wikipedia has audio samples — here’s the page for /æ/ . There’s also http://archive.phonetics.ucla.edu/ , which has audio samples of ‘...

Re: How to intentionally incorporate SAE features.
How to make this language not to seem lazy, despite of SAE features One simple way could be to add lots of non-SAE features too — there’s no reason for a conlang to have only SAE or only non‐SAE features. I see you've already started doing this: Reduplication does exist, but only on noun. Also, thi...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
Question: what do the small dashes mean on some of the letters? Are they an integral part of the letter, or just a diacritic of some sort? The script is featural (although some featural distinctions are rather abstract) so they represent phonological features. Thanks! Also, if this is the same cons...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
Another sample of my script, this time handwritten (albeit cleaned up on the computer significantly). It is a translation of the universal declaration of human rights into my personal conlang, not connected with any conworld. redspeech_sample_new.png I like it! I presume this is the same script as ...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
Looks lovely! How does it differ from the original Mongolian script? Sorry. Just seeing this. It doesn't really, except for distinguishing between /a/ and /e/ with a dot to the right of the /e/. The same technique is used to distinguish /t/ and /d/. I've also tried to consistently used the dot on /...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
I never actually posted this , come to think of it. Amazing! You've clearly put a lot of work into the details of Old Wenthish. This actually reminds me a lot of Yng's Risha Cubhi glosses on the old board. [I would post it directly here but having to manually reformat everything's a bugger] If you ...

Re: The Dwarves of Discworld
More Kad’k from The Fifth Elephant : There was a torrent of whispers. Vimes couldn’t understand, but he caught the word ‘Wilinus’. And, shortly afterwards, the word ‘ hr’grag ’, dwarfish for ‘thirty’. So we know at least one Kad’k number. I suppose that thirty isn’t the most useful number to know, b...

Re: The Dwarves of Discworld
As to a translation, that’s a little tricky. All the others (apart from Trollish and English) just mean “Oh God” or “My God,” so that should be fine. But we don’t really know much about Dwarvish spirituality beyond a journey through the underworld, Tak, and Agi Hammerthief. Perhaps a bit of worldbu...

Re: The Dwarves of Discworld
I've found another sample of Kad’k which Pedant missed, from Maskerade , when the interpreter starts babbling in multiple languages: Oh dear ... Ai! Meu Deus! Dio Mio! O Goden! D’zuk f’t! Aagorahaa! (Emphasis not from the original.) If nothing else, this gives some more evidence to Salmoneus’s b’zu...

Re: The Dwarves of Discworld
I prefer using * rgξga - there's no need to randomly insert an intensive where it isn't present semantically. (And I realise I was the one who was originally guilty of this.) I also don't think you need a 'no identical syllables' rule - possibly there is a formal register of Kad'k which uses * grag...

Re: The Dwarves of Discworld
You got most of it down pat. For the last bit: grag could be derived from two separate proto-forms, * rk-ξ-ga or * rk-a-ξ-ga (I should have mentioned an additional metathesis on the original), the latter using your intensive infix. Either one I might take to mean “mineshaft-AGENT” or possibly “mine...
