Re: Venting thread
So dad passed away on Friday afternoon. I'm just grateful he went quickly and peacefully in his sleep. Mum was a real trooper; she'd hit the road in the early morning and was here that evening. Don't know what else to say about all that, the words may come later, but for right now I guess I'm still ...

Re: Venting thread
Thanks guys, your kind words mean a lot.
We just found out mom is getting two weeks leave, with the possibility to extend it, so even if she doesnt get here before dad passes, I'll at least have her around to help me through what comes after.

Re: Venting thread
A shitty few months turned into a shitty few weeks, which just turned into a shitty few days with worse to come. Dad was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, and his condition has declined drastically over a short time. He was moved into palliative care yesterday, and its looking like its only ...

Re: Random Thread
I don't know if any of you are Halo fans, but I'm gonna humble brag. I helped make the conlang that the characters are speaking. I'm pretty proud of it and I hope anyone that check's it out enjoys it. Cudos. I went looking for info on it as soon as I finished ep. 1, but couldn't find any. I'd also ...

Re: Venting thread
You don't have to feel guilty - it's a normal thing, you try to keep calm and in control on a big issue, so you blow up at small issues. I'm sure you're right - if only logic was a surefire antidote to emotional responses/outbursts ;) . As long as you don't take it out on actual persons around you,...

Re: Venting thread
I had to take my dad in to hospital today for a diagnosis procedure, which meant I was going to miss the super bowl live broadcast. No biggie, I thought, I'll just keep away from tv/radio/socials and stream the game this evening or tomorrow. I waited for dad all day, while successfully staying ignor...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
I'm working out the numbers right now I cannot make head or tails of what you write there, perhaps someone else can... Honestly, neither can I. I think they mean that the word for 2 derives from the root meaning double/duplicate, 3 from triplicate and so on. @aliensdrinktea you could also use singl...

Re: Cat sounds as human equivalents
Thanks. Yeah, I've definitely heard cats make a /ᵐbɹæ:w/ like sound, so I went with it.linguistcat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 06, 2020 2:29 pm Very cool phonology. I was considering also using prenasal stops as well even before making this thread. They add a nice touch and are definitely very cat-like.

Re: Cat sounds as human equivalents
For what its worth, I have the following for my own (still a work in progress) cat language: m ŋ ɴ <m ng nq> ʔ <’> bʷ gʷ ɢʷ <b g q> (?? no labialization – Cw clusters instead ??) ᵐbʷ ᵑgʷ ᶰɢʷ <mb ngg nqq> (?? no labialization – Cw clusters instead ??) x χ <h x> ɣ ʁ <gh qh> ɹ j w <r y w> r ʀ <rr?/d? r...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
The major problem with this is gardenpathing. I've had the same problems with Sajiwan, which does aim for realism (as a CEC), that e.g. has "dem" being the definite plural article, the generic article, the 3rd person pronoun (subject and object), the 3rd person possesive and the plural ma...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
Only monosyllabic morphemes and no inflection Honestly, I think it is unrealistic. Even Chinese has disyllabic morpheme, like 蝴蝶 (which goes back to Middle Chinese) and 马达. While no inflection is doable, I think you mean word modification based on context, and there is no language without derivatio...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
I think it’s worth noting that the cluster analysis may be controversial (or at least, this is what the Wikipedia article on ǃXóõ implies). I don’t think there’s any actual evidence one way or another: I believe clicks in these languages have been analysed as clusters simply because otherwise there...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
If your aspirates behave like a cluster, I think it should be analyzed as a cluster. In Khmer, it's because the infix -um- would split the phoneme to /C/ and /h/, like t-um-hum If your language disallows cluster like khr or phl (English does), and there can only be a maximum of 2 consonants in the ...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
I seem to remember reading on Wikipedia about a Taiwanese language which has no aspirates, but does have Ch clusters which are pronounced as aspirates. I can’t quite remember exactly why this analysis was chosen, but I believe it was because aspirated consonants are found only between vowels, so e....

Re: Conlang Random Thread
If I have contrasting C-Cʰ phonemes, could I analyze Cʰ as Ch clusters with cluster-induced allophony? I thought the answer was "no, if they contrast, they are phonemic", but then I read this at the top of the wikipedia page for Ubykh regarding clicks in Khoisan languages, and now I'm conf...

Re: Help with climates
Good to hear you made some progress. I've gotten distracted myself, but not before I found this guide https://imgur.com/gallery/zTR3A/ , which, if I'm remembering correctly, has something about the weight of certain factors regarding precipitation. Someone over on alternatehistory.com linked this vi...

Re: Help with climates
Snip You bring up the same points that I wrestled with TBH. I must admit that I couldn't come up with any good answers. Since the writer of the guide notes that there is a good deal of approximation involved in the whole process, I figured it was a decent enough solution. Hopefully one of the membe...

Re: Help with climates
Presumably it would have a medium amount of precipitation, but I don’t really know. I think this is the biggest problem with that guide: the table at the end requires you to know precipitation on a scale of very wet/wet/moderate/low/very low/dry, and temperature on a scale of very hot/hot/warm/mild...

Re: Help with climates
this excellent guide Thanks for the link. I've been putting off redoing the climates for my conworld (originally done like a decade ago and it was entirely arbitrary re placement) and that guide has been very helpful. One thing about precipitation confuses me though: various factors are given for w...
