I was informed by a professor of mine that the ws found in British toponyms ending in -wich (Norwich, Greenwich, etc.) are supposed to be silent, and insists upon the 'correct' pronunciation of such words in his class.

Currently reading Akunin's Azazel (alas, in English translation -- one christened by its publishers The Winter Queen -- for my Russian is nowhere fluent enough to read a book). Hoping to read the Fandorin series all the way through!

Anyone can imagine what Greek script may look like if it evolved in a similar manner to Arabic script (joined, curly characters) instead of keeping most characteristics of Phoenician? I don't know about the Inuit languages, but the language gives off a faint touch of Maori
