Re: The Index Diachronica

(To be clear, for the moment I’m most interested in building up our library of sound changes… but stylistic improvements wouldn’t go unappreciated either!!) How much of the OG Index is usable? If some of those could be ported over it’d save a lot of time and effort. I mean the data is there. it's j...

Re: Polynesian

He described <e> and <o> as /ɛ/ and /ɔ/ and as [e] and [o] when _V or V_. Should we take this into account? For the changes you quoted, probably not. I’ve been trying not to editorialise by combining things from different sources, and everyone else seems to agree with this strategy. Noted

Re: Aesthetic Considerations

For fonts, I highly recommend Cambria, It can take whatever diacritics and it's included in Microsoft! On the other hand, it’s not included in Mac or Linux — and I believe the fonts we’ve mentioned have far greater character coverage than Cambria does. (Also, I just don’t really love it as a typefa...

Re: The Index Diachronica

Are there no comments on the above? If so, I’ll just go ahead and build it. I really like MediaWiki cuz I always thought it's pretty good for a huge collaborative work like this. What is the custom-built CMS you are talking about? I’m talking about building our own software to build a webpage from ...

Re: The Index Diachronica

So, at this point I’ve posted a few mockups, and we seem to have decided on what the final result should be like, more or less. Now we just need to build this thing. At the moment, I’ve been handwriting an HTML page for each family. This is annoyingly laborious and boring. It also limits the capabi...

Re: The Index Diachronica

Hi all,

Sorry about the absence. I have been relentlessly jobhunting, but I finally got a position (PhD in biotech). So I will be contributing from time to time. I am not sure how busy the PhD will be but I have some free time before it starts.

Nice, I'm in Taiwan for this week, I think I will have time to do some proposal of changes for ID that I kinda put off for a few months.

Re: Austronesian sound changes

Unfortunately that one I do not have a copy of. It does not seem to be on Libgen either unfortunately. Wolff revisits the Proto-Austronesian consonant system in a paper called Some Proto Austronesian coronals reexamined that you can find in here . I did manage to get hands on hardcopy versions of h...

Re: Austronesian sound changes

Ok I made this thread just so that I can ask:
Does anyone have access to "Studies in Austronesian Linguistics" (1988), edited by Richard McGinn? Specifically, the chapter "The PAN Consonant System" by John U. Wolff.

Re: The Index Diachronica

Are the transcriptions in ID by default /phonemic/ or [phonetic]? It seems like mix of both and it's confusing when a line of sound change is taken out of context, i.e., the Searchable ID. I tried for the latter when I could, but it wasn’t always possible. Yeah, I figure it's fundamentally impossib...

Does anyone know how to contact Tropylium? I want to ask them what the capital I in the Finnic sound changes means but their last activity here was 2 years ago.

Re: The Index Diachronica

Hi all, I don't think I have ever made a post here, so I would like to introduce myself. You may have known me for the Sorted Index Diachronica and Errata on reddit, and I heard from Man in Space that Index Diachronica is getting a new and improved edition, and I would like to contribute with my exp...
