Re: Flaws with the Metric System

Cms are too precise and metres too vague for normal everyday things (people, cars, furniture, small boats, windows, bookshelves, pianos, cows, etc.). ... What? I am fully aware that it is possible to use decimals. However, I don't want to, so I won't. Oh, I think in Australian English, "kilo&q...

Re: Flaws with the Metric System

Oh, I think in Australian English, "kilo" is sometimes used for "kilometer". Definitely not. Kilos are only kilograms. Kilometers can be shortened to kays or, less formally, klicks. The only one I can think of that is ambiguous is /mɪlz/ for mm or ml. Despite being Australian, I...

I have never heard this. Kilometres are shortened to "kay"s.

Re: Flaws with the Metric System

Despite being Australian, I've always used imperial for anything length-related - miles, inches, feet, acres, mph, mpg; while volume, weight and temperature I use metric. All Australians use feet and inches for height, and most use them for rough distances and estimates and a few other purposes whic...

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread

I have recently been convinced that the "naur" vowel is a real thing, at least in eastern states Australian English (mostly as spoken by people under 30, especially women). It even makes sense in an AusEng context — diphthongs tend to spread out more exaggeratedly, hence why /aɪ̯/ becomes ...

[ɔʏ̯] is almost identical to the local AusEng GOAT vowel.

Re: The Index Diachronica

Somewhat random question: should we asterisk protolanguage categories, or not? For instance, if a sound change has ‘all vowels’ in the target, should that be notated as V or *V ? Personally I think the former (on the basis that the asterisk represents reconstructed phonemes ), but I’m not sure. I t...

Re: (Inner) Skou

I haven’t seen ⟨R⟩ before (or ⟨G⟩), but these seem reasonable. Really?? R is practically everywhere. I'm not sure about G actually, I think only CRVN are the really intuitive ones. And also the only really useful ones. I feel this would just be inviting confusion — nothing wrong with [-voice+stop]....

*ʉ → *i /S_ What is S here? (We should really figure out some coherent convention for these uppercase symbols…) Sorry, that's supposed to be just /s/. Idk why I capitalised it. As for uppercase symbols, I think there's no debate as to C = consonant V = vowel N = nasal R = approximant If we wanted t...

Now that I have more time, I’ve resumed going through these changes, and I don’t understand the second one quoted. By ‘otherwise’, do you simply mean ‘when not nasalised’?
Yes.

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread

Weird verbs are a characteristic feature of Skou languages; although I don't know the exact details, I believe that irregular and/or marginal object marking is relatively common. iirc object agreement is only consistently (through the family) marked on the verb "hit".
