Re: Poll about a possible conscript

If anything is a square, it's /g/, or perhaps /ʈ/. /m/ isn't a square, it's an irregular blob. Although I agree that /k/ points upwards.

I think /k/ is pointy enough to be a triangle. And /t/ (especially an alveolar one) feels quite square.

FWIW I have: comm [kʰɔm] calm [kʰäːm] call , cool [kʰʊˑu̯(ɫʷ)] doll [dɔɫʷ ~ dɔu̯(ɫʷ)] The latter likes to merge with dole [dɔu̯(ɫʷ)], which is the same for basically all /ɔl/ words like poll , atoll , quoll . Although lol is resistant, always [ɫʷɔɫʷ], but even then it's probably slightly higher than...

apparently deal, seal, peal are standardly [-iːl] but real is standardly [ˈriːəl], which he chalks up to the different etymologies of the words As another australian I have this. Almost all -eal words are /iːl/ (realised as [ɪːɫʷ]) except for real , reel , eel , seal (the animal) and wheel which ar...

They consistently lower vowels, and sometimes also centralise them (e.g. in Ditidaht, Nuu-chah-nulth, Tsakhur, Udi) This sounds interesting; do you have any references I can read through? There's this one on Ditidaht, this one for the Northeast Caucasian languages and this one for Nuu-chah-nulth. I...

Re: Conlang Random Thread

Would it be sensible for /a/ to be realised as [ɒ] next to [ħ] in a three-vowel system? I’d say it seems plausible to me, but pharyngeals do weird things, so I’m not sure. (Apparently Arabic has [æ] in this position, but it has [æ] next to most other consonants too.) Counterintuitively, pharyngeals...

Has anyone noticed a realisation of /u/ as [ʉ]? Could this lead to u > y in the future? Yes to both. I have something like /əʉ̯/ for GOOSE which leaves room for /ʊː/ THOUGHT/NORTH/FORCE/CURE in the high back space. I've also got /ɵː/ for NURSE, so it's conceivable that future Australian English wil...

Your sound changes on their own are mostly fine, although I'd second all of Travis's suggestions. v / θ / _{a,e,i} This is the weirdest one you've got. I can potentially see it working if as Travis said you change it to ð instead. Ideally, you could have something like {m v} / {n ð} /_i, which would...

There is no reason why a reconstructed proto-lang should behave differently from a real, attested one. I disagree. In the real world, a protolang is always hampered by the limitations of the comparative method, so it inevitably does behave differently from an attested one. If PIE was attested, we'd...
