Re: Crime and punishment.

The Kobardon speaking people of Fredauon generally classify the judical systems of Fredauon according to their complexity when dealing with punishment and reward. Very simple systems only distinguish between punishable and non-punishable actions. In more complex systems some actions are also rewarde...

Re: Conlang Random Thread

Why not ꓤ? Or at least ⅃? You could also use L l in general, which is similar to some Romanizations of Tamil.

Re: Eine kurze Frage über Deutsch

Looks like a form of (Low German/Dutch/Frisian) diminutive -ke to me, which was either shortened or not expanded in the first place. So a complex form of non-standard origin. But it seems pronounceable at least.

Re: Elections in various countries

Green campaign posters rarely show Baerbock here. I feel like the CDU hasn't started really campaigning here, apart from showcasing local candidates.

Re: Loan words with more specific meanings after than before the borrowing

I think I translate Webseite as Homepage in my head and they can have all three meanings, even though I know the 'proper' use. Maybe it's just me.

Re: Loan words with more specific meanings after than before the borrowing

Mainly because 'page' is 'Seite' in German, which sounds a lot like 'site', right?

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread

(let me know if this is too open-ended of a question for this thread) what are sound changes that happen to tones? that is, not where do they come from, but once a language has them how do they end up changing later? do they stick around? split? merge? go away? etc. I think you can google tonexodus...

Yes, many, many languages in West Africa and East Africa have ATR harmony and lexical/grammatical tone, like Akan, Yoruba and Maasai.

I think this happened in Hausa. At least I was taught so.

There is a paper by Dalrymple and Mofu (2012) on Indonesian number semantics. Maybe they talk about it or give some reference.

Re: Conlang Random Thread

Has a natlang (or a conlang for that matter) done a number system contrasting specific and non-specific numerosity? The specific number would be used when the number of entities is known to the speaker (or alternatively, available from context), such as when the noun is modified with a (cardinal) n...

Re: What have you accomplished today?

I've been reading a little about the Polynesian language family and was considering reducing the available consonants even further, testing for minimal pairs, and I noticed that this conlang 2.0 already consistently avoided using both voiced and unvoiced stops in one root. So far I have only five e...

Re: Grammaticalization Quickie Thread

I don't really know where else to post this, but I'm working on a minimal phoneme conlang atm and I had the idea that syllable structures could be shiftable, with segments being reinterpreted as consonantal or vocalic alternately depending on where the stress is. It's simpler to demonstrate what I ...
