Re: Random Thread
Might be partly just because evolution is the newest of those ideas. The round earth was already established in the Hellenistic world before Christianity even existed , so most of Christian academia has been fine with it all along; and heliocentrism has been established for nearly 400 years, while t...

Re: Kinda Sorta Theological/Philosophical Conundrum
Oh what the heck, I'll try answering this. The first thing I'd say is that moderately improbable (as opposed to astronomically improbable) coincidences are still likely to happen to someone, somewhere , at some time. If there's a one in a million chance of an event happening to someone, then it's pr...

Re: Innovative Usage Thread
I find that some patterns of strong verb are more spready than others. I had to stop myself the other day from saying "He prode himself on being on time" (class 1), and I've said "twoze" as the past tense of tweeze before (class 2). But some other classes don't spread. I never a...

Re: What can we do about the phonology hurdle?
As someone whose phonologies so far consist of phoneme inventory + syllable structure + maybe some allophony, I would definitely be interested if anyone who knows more about the topic posted some tutorials on this board. For example, I've never heard anything about stress patterns having any deeper ...

Re: Innovative Usage Thread
anyone here besides me say hamburg to mean ground beef? is it a New England localism? Might it even be all traceable to a single supermarket chain that one day decided to trim its label just a tiny bit so they could make the text stand out more? I'm familiar with this usage, and I'm also in New Eng...

It means "how the situation will look to other people", the implications other people will take from the situation. Usually in terms of public image, but in this case it seems to just mean how the police will see the situation.

Due to the above discussion, I just noticed that I always say I'm sitting "in" a chair (regardless of the size or shape of the chair), but "on" a couch. But apparently sitting "on" a chair is standard for some people?

Re: What languages are you particularly interested in, and why?
Well, I've never had the patience to sit down and learn a whole language, but languages I'm interested in on some level include Quechua (I read zompist's page on it a long time ago and liked the aesthetics of it), Japanese (I watch anime and like how it sounds), Irish and other Celtic languages (aga...

Re: The Computer And General Tech Thread - Software, Hardware, Questions, etc.
You're welcome! One note though is that, on the other hand, there are many programs that process text files which do not handle the BOM as one would expect and which may function incorrectly as a result (e.g. many compilers). Yes, character encodings are a mess and what one program requires, breaks ...

Re: The Computer And General Tech Thread - Software, Hardware, Questions, etc.
But the other problem is that Japanese text and ÅÄÖ get replaced by random strings. Is there some way to define encoding in the file, or should I give up on this? After the <head> line, put: <meta charset="utf-8"> Thanks for the reply. I tried this now, but it made no difference. :| Hmm.....

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread
I have read that using "12 AM" and "12 PM" can lead to confusion and so are best avoided. Is this really true? Do people get confused when they hear those and wonder what time is being referred to? If people consistently use "12 AM" for midnight and "12 PM" f...

Does anyone know how a possessed case usually works, in terms of syntax? Wikipedia doesn't have much info about the languages that have a possessed case,* and googling "possessed case" mostly turns up stuff about possessive case (or demonic possession) instead. In particular, I'm wondering...

Re: How's my climate map?
And actually, the area between the two mountain ranges is supposed to be a high plateau, so it should probably have a climate more like Tibet, though I'm not sure if being so close to the west coast would change that? Yes, I think so. The climate would be wetter and colder than surrounding areas, t...

Re: Some Verdurian typos
I've been reading through the Arcél atlas--good stuff by the way--and found a couple of issues: This page looks like it's supposed to have some pictures of Uytainese logograms inline in the text. There's also a picture missing from Tlan ("Right: Tlan’s empire at his death") Actually, there...

Re: How's my climate map?
Oh, hi! OK, I'm not terribly good at climate but a few things strike me as weird: Mediterranean climates are a little too far south: typically these range from 45° to 30° (from Southern France to Cairo, or from Oregon to Sonora). It also tends to border ocean, so parts of that Maritime climate on t...
