Re: Daily Creativity Thread
It seems weird to speak of a language dying out in a specific year. Yes, languages have definite years where their final native speaker dies, why do you want to fight? I can't tell the difference either, and I'm only slightly nearsighted, to the point that I don't ever wear glasses or contacts. wel...

Re: Daily Creativity Thread
Thank you. It's both the simplest and most beautiful script I've ever created, but I don't think it would be particularly useful as a means of communication even if the artistic enhancements were removed .... it would be roughly as readable as cuneiform, which got people by but, to my knowledge, has...

drew something again in a very old script ...... it spells /kupukapukipa/ in Late Old Andanese. the slightly thicker lines are the lines of the script and the others are connectors (done to make it easier for me). the colors are purely aesthetic

Re: Conlang Random Thread
I've heard of bound pronouns (like french je and tu) and bound morphemes (like in inuit languages which can't appear without a free morpheme) but how about bound verbs? As in verbs which can't appear outside of a noun phrase? Could you for example have something like... 1.sg do+game-ACC "I pla...

i realize my post above may not have been that helpful .... and i didnt even realize for some reason that i was referring back to my own post on this board from last year ..... the link is http://verduria.org/viewtopic.php?p=25796#p25796 . but just to be clear .... it seems like we're arguing over t...

Re: cupbearers
Though English has a perfectly good native word, shink , meaning "cupbearer, waiter; to pour an alcoholic drink", it has fallen out of use. .... Perhaps modern English speakers have come to prefer words with more than one morpheme, or perhaps we simply don't like the sound of those old Ge...

i dont have as much free time as i used to, and what time i have i put more into writing stories than into conlangs lately, so i apologize i dont have a good example to show. i couldnt even find the post you were replying to, so this might not be helpful. but if youre saying you have a language in w...

Re: Innovative Usage Thread
i'd put it in the imperative category .... there are at least a few other examples of phrases like that, and though some have more positive meanings .... "go me!" and "yay me!" for example .... they seem to be used sarcastically as often as not, and to seem particularly rude when...

Re: Semi-democracies in conworlds
Yeah, that's what I think I'm going to do .... I know my posting this right now looks like I basically just took the idea from your posts, but .... I believe this is still the logical outcome that I would have arrived at on my own since most of my countries either lack a single head of state or have...

Oh, interesting, .... I'd always assumed the line was "...can fall asleep." It makes perfect sense either way. But I checked a bunch of lyric sites now .... incidentally, it seems LyricWiki is gone .... and none of them agree with me.

Oh, one last detail about the "samurai" metaphor. They existed on the public dole. To have stable, formalized elites like that you have to have an official revenue stream. For European aristos, it was rents on huge tracts of farm land. Japan went full "Big Brother Nanny State Pinko&q...

Re: The "How Do You Pronounce X" Thread
how about the rogue nasal vowel in chocolate? I like my chocolate refrigerated, and nasals sound warm to me, so i would never adopt that pronunciation even subconsciously, but i now know I'm not the only one who hears it. does anyone here use that pronunciation? is it local, or widespread but yet ra...

Re: Conworld Fashion
This is one of the few areas where my lack of coverage reflects the society's attitudes rather than just being an omission on my part. Almost all human societies oppose jewelry and other forms of bodily decoration, and in hot climates, nudism is common. Nudists often believe themselves to be more ph...

Re: Semi-democracies in conworlds
Yes, that's a nice idea. I've always wanted to see a monarchy that falls in between the extremes we see in our world ..... absolute monarchy on the one hand, where the rest of the government hardly matters, and the more common modern setup on the other hand, where the monarch is but a figurehead. I ...

Romania still does it .... they have seats reserved in their lower house of Parliament for all the recognized ethnic minorities in Romania. Which excludes the Hungarians, ... 🤷♂️ it seems they lost that privilege, though perhaps the rejection is mutual since the Parliament is such that size doesn't...

Re: Conworld random thread
the Romania project, if i get to it, will be about a civil war in Romania .... they join WW2 as an Allied power, but pro-Axis forces take over much of the country and that is why no one flees into it for safety. That's all Ive got so far. i'd have to explain some other time if you wanted details ......

( to linguoboy ) about two months ago in this thread you accused another poster of misinterpreting your argument to find something easier to attack. if you can recognize it when other people do it, Im sure you can recognize it when you do it yourself. my pointing it out, several times now, hasnt sto...
