Re: The "How Do You Pronounce X" Thread

among us

I realized I pronounce it [əmʌŋg‿ʌs] rather than [əmʌŋ ʌs]. PRobably because of the amogus meme. In no other context does the [g] arise for me

Re: The "How Do You Pronounce X" Thread

ɪɾɪd̚
ðæɾɪd̚
wəɾɪd̚

[d̚] can be swapped for [ʔ]

In careful speech the [d̚] would become a simple [d] (not [d̥] for some reason)

"edited it"

For me:

careful speech
[ɛɾɪtʰɪd̥ ɪʔ]

fast speech
[ɛɾɪ ɪ̰ ɪ̰]
(may have intervocalic glottal stops)

Re: English questions

[ä] appears everywhere for me, partly because I have the caught-cot merger. Dawn, don, doll, bot, bought, tom, mob, sought, sod, job, body.... I'd put it in the LOT set. I considered PALM, but looking at the wikipedia examples, my PALM words are all over the place: father, psalm, bra all have differ...

Re: English questions

[ä] for paltry.
[ʊ] for poultry.

Both are followed by [ɫ]. Odd, given that I have pole [pʰɔɫ] and poultry = pole + tree

Re: Random Thread

My electronic circuits professor used gimel for... something. The font was also so small and hard to read that I thought it was a lambda. When I checked the slides online afterward I was like "oh my god is that Hebrew gimel???"

Re: Random Thread

Chess engines at the time were highly materialistic. They prioritized moves that win material (trading lower value pieces for higher value). It's an important metric but it misses the bigger picture, like how safe your king is, who's leading the attack, how freely can your pieces move... Humans coul...

Not sure if any other source has ever pointed this out, besides this one Medium article from 2020. 1997, 2nd match between Deep Blue and Garry Kasparov, game 2, move 37: Deep Blue plays an extremely "human" move that basically wins the game. 2016, match between AlphaGo and Lee Sedol, game ...

Does the ellipsis stand for any amount of arbitrary sounds (until the next vowel)? Can it cross word boundaries?

apart from the problems of creating them and getting them on land I do have a (partial) story justification for this (a human is helping them). I forgot to mention that these aliens' language is at low frequencies. Echolocation signals aren't being transmitted through the boxes. Sorry I was unclear...

Re: Syntax random

I'd say "X", but 1) I'm not sure, and 2) I don't have any idea why . I think I'd expect it to contain X. But I wouldn't be shocked by the opposite. If you made me choose X or Y, I would say that you probably intend on getting X rather than Y Not a native speaker, but for me that means &qu...

I'm envisioning a communication system for an aquatic, echolocating species. A network of water-filled boxes spans the continent, boosting the sound waves if necessary, before shooting it towards the next box. Why not set up a series of reflectors in the water? It would have to route through enemy t...

Re: Nánuvai scratchpad

Cool I noticed there's an agreement suffix, only for the dissonant location. Plus VOS became VSO. Is that an oversimplification like you said, or is it representative of the actual forms? It's kinda like split ergativity, if I squint my eyes. And instead of ergativity it's uhhhhhh locativity or some...
