Re: Happy things thread!

I have Internet again after three long hours without it! (Yes, I have my smartphone, but I would prefer to not stare at my phone's small screen if I can help it or use up megabytes of cell phone data.) Young people today, honestly! When I was young we had to go 24 hours each day without the Interne...

Re: How often do you use cash ?

Personally, hardly ever, although I keep some around in case I need it. I'm a little bit older than you, and I don't think I remember ever seeing anyone use checks. We call them "cheques" round here, and my wife still gets them from her clients, many of whom are elderly and haven't yet mig...

[face-straightness=forced]
The tendency towards aspiration in Germanic is of course easily explained by the fact that it has typically been spoken in relatively cold ciimates.

Text 2 looks like it's the beginning of the "Hobbit"; hopit is the giveaway, and then things I expected come along, like the repetition of "hole". Continuing to guess would have felt like cheating because I know the text.
More: show
It almost certainly is; well spotted.

Re: Random Thread

I noticed a strange thing near where I live: a concrete lamp-post had fallen over into the street. The street simply isn't long enough for a vehicle to build up enough speed to knock it over, and if it had, it would have fallen the other way. And since it's right next to a house, it's unlikely it wo...

Poll about a possible conscript

I was idly thinking about a featural conscript which used the simplest shapes - circle, triangle, and square - to represent /p t k/, and began to wonder which would be which. Then it occurred to me: why not ask the ZBB? So, what do you think? Which shape fits which phoneme, and why? Obviously there'...

Re: "centrism"

The trouble with the term centrism is the same as with a lot of political terms: it looks like it should logically mean something, but it actually turns out to mean something quite different with pejorative connotations. This makes actually using it fraught with Danger, Peril, and Unintended Consequ...
