Re: An idea from XKCD
The problem with this idea is what about central vowels — if rounded front vowels and unrounded back vowels are simply more central than their unrounded front and rounded back counterparts, how do we handle distinctions such as beween [ɨ] and [ʉ]? Does anybody actually know what the formants are fo...

This reminds me that it was nearly 25 years ago that I interviewed for a job writing a "DVD Authoring System", which was the first time I'd heard of DVDs.

One of Asimov's books has, I kid you not, huge stupidifying machines in space aimed at humans below. Maybe they started up around then. He was prescient. These things are nowadays known as "television", "Twitter", "Facebook", "Tabloid newspapers", and so on.

Re: COVID-19 thread
Heigh-ho, it's my time now. Yes, alice tested positive for covid, just two days after getting back from a holiday at which something was clearly up. The loss of my voice should have been a clue. Re: British Politics Guide
You don't understand. Boris with fight on! and fight on! and GET THE JOB DONE that 14 million voters elected him to do! Mere resignations from his cabinet won't distract him from his Ordained Destiny! Don't you read the Daily Express?
