Re: Famous 1970s Dinosaur Conlang Pakuni, Ancient Greek, Bees: Prometheus Text 2

Bob, a few points to help you cool down and think a bit. 1. Yes, some others in this thread could have been a little less abusive. It's not nice to get that sort of feedback, especially when you've clearly put a lot of effort into something. (You might want to consider what its like to get no feedba...

Re: The most difficult things about conlanging

Trying to come up with features which (1) are interesting, (2) are unusual, and (3) have not yet appeared in one of Zompist's conlangs.

Re: grad school paper about the ZBB

@Vardelm: Nice and interesting paper! Your occasional comments on the history of the board made me think that it would be nice if someone could put together a full history sometime, possibly (if they were feeling particularly ambitious) in the context of a history of the internet conlanging communi...

Re: British Politics Guide

There have been remarks that the ERG is "a party within a party". The Militant Tendency for the late-2010s generation?

Re: British Politics Guide

To use my favourite mixed metaphor, this is truly the Conservative Party's sacred cows coming home to roost. Ted Heath took the country into the EU and every Conservative Prime Minister after him has suffered as a result. The front page headline of one of our right-wing tabloids was on the money whe...

Re: British Politics Guide

The thing which is most depressing to me is when the BBC goes and does vox pop and of course there's so many ignorant pro-Brexit views, because few people actually pay attention to what's going on in politics at the time, and many of those who pay attention to the news get it through the rampantly ...

Re: Conlangjugator

(Also, so far we have four people in this thread - Zju, chriss_notts, alice and me - who have each made their own SCA. Is there some sort of list of all SCAs currently in existence? It would be really interesting to compare them all!) Alas, the list of all SCAs that have been created is longer than...

Re: Conlangjugator

The problem is that some features may be fundamentally incompatible. For example, many work on the basis of string substitution which implies one internal model. Mine has a completely different internal model which means symbol substitution is meaningless: Input string -> featural phonetic represen...

Re: British Politics Guide

Meanwhile, in an attempt to steal Parliament's thunder, Nigel "expletive" Farage has resigned from UKIP. Although nobody is yet taking bets on him rejoining to become re-elected as leader; perhaps he's going to form his own political party and attract many Brexiteers.

Re: Conlangjugator

I honestly don't find it particularly surprising that so many people have made their own SCA — I made my own[1] because I wanted features or syntax not supported by any of the ones I could find, and it made for an interesting programming project. That's exactly why I keep asking about a Grand Unifi...

Re: Conlangjugator

Python? Haskell? Wimps! Come on, if you can't do it in Fortran 77 on a 4-bit machine then it isn't worth doing. Seriously, though, I've found both Ruby and Scala to be good languages for an SCA. Pure functional Scala with recursion and immutable objects in particular lends itself to interesting solu...

Re: British Politics Guide

What does that mean? Well, if the Prime Minister and/or the Attorney General is found in contempt, they could be suspended from Parliament (not unheard of) Or, under a little-known law, suspended from a high place in Parliament... The committee also contains Sir Christopher Chope, who may be even w...

Likewise, my SCA doesn't use normal regexps but a custom matching and replacing - er - engine? They're much more appropriate to SCAs, and more fun, too! If you don't mind asking, how are they more appropriate? The three things missing that I can think of (ad-hoc groups, features, matching groups in...

Re: British Politics Guide

It's hypothetical, yes, but an intriguing thought-experiment: if the voting system changed to make new parties viable, what would we get? Almost certainly Labour would split into True Socialists and Pink Liberals, and the Conservatives would similarly devolve into pro-and anti-Europe factions; it's ...
