Re: German spelling reform
I wonder if there is some kind of consensus brewing in here which could eventually lead to a General Preferred Romanization For All Languages.

Re: Choice of contractions in English
This has got to be a very well-studied area. Have you checked Pullum and Huddleston? What is that? He's talking about The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language (2002) by Rodney Huddleston and Geoffrey Pullum (of Language Log fame) (eds.). It's an English grammar 1800+ pages long, a wonder of a ...

Re: German spelling reform
What's wrong with hačeks? Nothing particularly, although it is arguable that one should observe a tendency towards the elimination of diacritics in one's orthography if possible. Although they should be restricted to just the palatalised consonants. Yes. p-hachek is unlikely to suggest /pf/, for ex...

Choice of contractions in English
In sequences of three words where the middle word can contract with either of the other two, is it known if there are any factors which govern which contraction is actually used? As an example, consider "you aren't" versus "you're not"; the first seems more natural to me, but the...

Re: British Politics Guide
Does the investigation into Boris Johnson mean it's already decided that he'll be kicked out? If not, why isn't the process public? Context: http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-45130532 Boris is too popular, and thus too valuable to the Conservatives, to actually be kicked out. Expect a slap on the...

Basic terminology question
What is the correct linguistic term for a group of phonemes, whether unordered ("I put a ??? down here a moment ago, and it's vanished") or ordered ("It's naive to assume you can model speech entirely as ???")?

I can't find it on the website, but The Grauniad on Saturday had a headline which was something like "... advice for women on heat".

Apropos of which: Are you taking requests, Sal? And, if so, can you explain this mishegoss with Labour rewriting the standards on precisely how insulting you're allowed to be to Jews? Sal will no doubt go into much more detail, but in summary the Labour Party is torn between trying not to offend it...

Re: Of labials and labiodentals
Because it is a lot easier to get complete closure between two lips than it is between the lower lip and the teeth. In fact before the advent of modern dentistry I reckon true labiodental stops would have been impossible for many people because of gaps between the teeth allowing airflow, when in or...

Of labials and labiodentals
Are there any theories of phon[ology, etics] which explain why, in many (most?) languages, /p/ and /b/ are bilabials, but /f/ and /v/ are labiodentals? I suppose KEEP CALM and CONLANG ON; that's just what the LORD intended will have to do in the absence of anything else, but if you feel compelled to ...

Morphologised Initial palatalizations?
Are there any instances of palatalised and nonpalatalised consonants alternating in initial position within the inflection of a word? This could happen, for example, in some Indo-European varieties when an initial /k/ or /g/ is variously followed immediately by palatalising /e/ alternating with nonp...
