Re: British Politics Guide

Even those pushing the antisemitism argument have seen no reason to conceal how closely this is tied to economic ideology - one of the dissenting MPs explained (on a prominent political radio show) that to be left-wing is inherently to be antisemitic - "it is very much part of hard-left politi...

Everyone, rejoice! All problems have been solved! There's no longer any need to worry! A glorious future awaits Britain! https://www.theguardian.com/business/2019/mar/14/uk-signs-post-brexit-trade-deal-with-fiji-and-papua-new-guinea Well that certainly is helpful for my plan to run away to Melanesi...

Re: British Politics Guide

For the Tiggers, I suspect it's a disaster. "Anti-semitism" is a nice cover to excuse their defections and sow discord in Labour, How sad it must be to be Mighty Salmoneus, He Who Knows and He Who Understands, and to be so indifferent to bigotry that one can't even imagine other people se...

Re: What are you reading, watching and listening to? - All languages

Cantiga de Santa Maria 193: Sobelos fondos do mar ----- I will admit I'm not too familiar with most of RVW's work beyond the classics, with one exception - the Tuba Concerto, now that's a delightful little gem. I think also one might be tempted to put Britten into that same category, although he ap...

Re: British Politics Guide

Well the Northern Ireland secretary still seems determined to make the case for no longer being the Northern Ireland secretary. Her line about the British Security forces not being criminals because they were following orders rather reminds me of this classic Spitting Image number.

Re: Figuring out how many sound changes I want

Honestly, I wouldn't worry all that much. Languages can change at wildly different rates, to the point where social factors such as massive social upheaval, contact and so on can be better predictors of change than simple time depth. Definitely throw in some more small-scale changes for extra natura...

Re: The Asta Thread - ZBB version

Does it ever make a difference which order they go in? The aspect-marking in the first example is maybe enough to make it reversible, but the others seem like maybe they could only go in the order you give them in. (E.g., in all three that give reasons/causes, the reason or cause is given first.) I...

Re: The Asta Thread - ZBB version

OK, let's just go over other kinds of clausal conjunction quickly, caus there isn't really that much too it. Asta is one of those languages that doesn't go in for complex subordination strategies or a plethora of conjunctions. In fact there are only two true conjunctions in the entire language, and ...

Re: A language without raising?

I can imagine certain kinds of polysynthetic languages (e.g. Greenlandic, Nootka and the like) might lack raising as it is traditionally thought of, because they express the equivalent of raising verbs in English with suffixes to the main verb. And even then there might also be plenty of languages w...

Re: British Politics Guide

I'm not sure there'll be that many more joining after this, particularly from the Tories, unless Amber Rudd and Nicki Morgan decide they can't stay either and take a bunch more MPs with them, but even then many of them will be annihilated by their local associations if they do.

It kinda makes me sad cause I'm like mèthru here, I kinda admire Chuka as a politician, and he is a capable speaker, in fact I'd even go so far as to say that he's the kind of politician that ought to be running the Labour party, were it not for his politics.

An update n the Dr Bateman vs. JRM situation; she has appeared on Good Morning Britain, again naked, but this time with blur because morning TV, and has once again challenged JRM to a debate, but this time has dropped her demand for JRM to be nude like her, much to everyone's relief.

US Colleges usually bring such cases to the attention of municipal courts, not their own authorities, because in some places (even whole states), nudity is a crime. How prudish of you! But on a more serious point, it's not so much a matter of whether the college could prosecute her, because if they...

OK, let's discuss relative clauses at last. So relative clauses are formed from nominalisations. These are basically formed from the generic nominaliser -‘ə. In the case of intransitive subjects and also transitive core arguments where the other argument is clear from context this is all that is req...

Small semi-entertaining diversion. So there's at Cambridge, specifically Gonville and Caius [kʰiːz] college, there is a Dr Victoria Bateman, a fellow in economics, and she has a bit of a... gimmick when it comes to promoting feminism, in that she likes to go to conferences in the nude. This has led ...

Re: Linguistic Miscellany Thread

It just happens that the passive participle is used in English is used to form the perfect, and the active participle in English is used to form the progressive, and the progressive is most commonly used to express the non-habitual present. Yeah that's what I was getting at, and I think particular ...
