Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread's Sequel
Thanks. I am probably not the first to come up with such a theory, though I arrived at it by my own means and don't remember any references.

Re: DJP criticisms
My major problem with The Art of Language Invention was its totally misleading title. It's not about how to conlang; it's about how DJP made some specific conlangs, with a bit of other linguistic data thrown in. There's nothing wrong with the information in the book, but it's not what I thought I w...

Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread's Sequel
I have a new idea about the sigmatic nominative. According to this idea, it is not related to the genitive. Rather, in late PIE1, animate subjects were reinforced by postposing the pronoun *sa (> PIE3 *so ), in constructions similar to those found in colloquial German ( Mein Freund, der singt im Kir...

I see. So I was wrong - I thought that they were mainly a Hittite thing.

Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread's Sequel
Could you give an example of these 'clitic chains'? AFAIK, those "clitic chains" are a Hittite thing, more prominent in late than in early texts (which is a pretty sure sign of an innovation), with little evidence in favour of them in other IE languages, though Gamkrelidze and Ivanov reco...

Re: DJP criticisms
@hwhatting: Very true what you say about the typological diversity of Indo-European. Most people who say "IE" when it comes to typology of conlangs in fact mean "SAE" (Standard Average European), which in itself is poorly defined and controversial. True enough, in fact I'd proba...

Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread's Sequel
If Grassmann's Law had been productive in PIE, why are the stops deaspirated by it voiceless in Greek? One would expect voiced stops instead. I think this is good evidence that this happened after the PIE breathy-voiced stops lost their voicing in Greek. Also, there are no traces of such a dissimila...

Re: DJP criticisms
@Frislander: Apparently there was a contest (I dimly remember a call for participants on the CONLANG list), and David won it. That said, David's conlangs are far better than Klingon - which is actually a good demonstration how not to create a conlang. It's one of the worst conlangs I have ever seen,...

Re: DJP criticisms
I have seen better conlangs than his (though High Valyrian is a gem), but it is unfair to compare hired work with a deadline with something the author made for himself and working on it for many years. As far as hired work goes, I don't know anything better; David certainly set the bar higher in con...

Re: DJP criticisms
I think it is a good book. Indeed, after reading it, I considered giving up my own plans for a book about conlangs and conlanging and translating David's book instead. However, I decided not to, not because I feel that David's book wasn't worth translating into German, but because I have enough idea...

Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread's Sequel
I thought Indo-Hittite is not mainstream. Indeed, it is controversial - but the label "Indo-Hittite" more so than the idea . There are many Indo-Europeanists who consider it likely that Anatolian broke off early but do not speak of "Indo-Hittite". The point is that the Anatolian...

Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread's Sequel
When I said that I don't see any problems, I was referring to the general outline of the paper; indeed, some details such as his reconstruction of the allative case are IMHO questionable. Kloekhorst, while having some good and interesting ideas, tends to overvalue the conservatism of Hittite (well, ...

Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread's Sequel
That article surely is very interesting, and I did not notice any obvious problems with it (but then, I am only an amateur in this field, and I may be missing something important). It is also pretty compatible with my own thinking. I have been assuming a penultimate accent for PIE1 (the pre-ablaut s...
