I went for a walk in the forest last night. I went there by bus. When I got off the bus. it was raining. It is nice to be in the forest at nighttime in the rain.

Like, just by being an anglophone, I have all of these words filed away in my brain as "northern hemisphere tree": birch, larch, spruce, fir, oak, elm, beech, poplar, maple, chestnut, juniper, willow, lime (Linden ... not the citrus one). I can recognise oaks, chestnuts, poplars and weeping willows and that's about it. The rest, when someone tells me "That's a ______," I think "Ah, so this one is a __________" and then often forget it it. In Brisbane, I know all the common trees in suburban areas: Moreton Bay fig (Ficus macrophylla), weeping fig (Ficus benjamina), poinciana (Delonix regia), Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia), African Tulip (Spathodea campanulata), golden rain (Koelreuteria paniculata), camphor laurel (Cinnamomum camphora), leopard tree (Libidibia ferrea), Tipuana tipu, Lemon myrtle (Backhousia citriodora), macadamia (Macadamia sp.), she-oaks (Casuarina sp.), hoop pine (Araucaria cunninghamii), Norfolk Island pine (Araucaria heterophylla), bunya pine (Araucaria bidwillii), umbrella tree (Schefflera actinophylla), Alexandra palm (Archontophoenix alexandrae), queen palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana), royal palm (Roystonea regia), travellers' "palm" (Ravenala madagascariensis) mango (Mangifera indica), lillypilly (Syzigium sp.), silky "oak" (Grevillea robusta) and various wattles (Acacia sp.), bottlebrushes (Callistemon sp.), paperbarks (Melaleuca sp.) and gums (Eucalyptus sp.) that I don't know to the species level. Wow, you know so many plants!

More: show
I realised recently that I barely knew the names of any plants here — I couldn’t even recognise a Eucalyptus let alone anything else — so I’ve been trying to learn more about botany recently. So far I can identify: Jacaranda, umbrella tree, delicious monster/swiss-cheese plant/whatever you call it, split-leaf philodendron, Norfolk pine, hoop pine, bunya bunya, bird-of-paradise, traveller’s palm, banana, ginkgo and liquidambar to the species level, as well as paperbarks, bottlebrushes, Banksia, palms, and possibly Eucalyptus and wattles. I know even less about Northern Hemisphere trees, despite the fact that I was born in Canada, and I can only empathise with your reaction to German trees!

That depends on whether this is the normal way for you language to express things :). Looks very North American to me...
