Is this too long? A big wall of text yet giving lots of space for experimentation

2021 AD
The North Wind and the Sun were disputing which was the stronger, when a traveler came along wrapped in a warm cloak
[ðə ˈnoɹθ ˌwɪnd ən (ð)ə ˈsʌn wɚ dɪsˈpjutɪŋ ˈwɪtʃ wəz ðə ˈstɹɑŋɡɚ, wɛn ə ˈtɹævəlɚ ˌkem əˈlɑŋ ˈɹæpt ɪn ə ˈwoɹm ˈklok.]

They agreed that the one who first succeeded in making the traveler take his cloak off should be considered stronger than the other.
[ðe əˈɡɹid ðət ðə ˈwʌn hu ˈfɚst səkˈsidəd ɪn ˈmekɪŋ ðə ˈtɹævəlɚ ˈtek ɪz ˈklok ˌɑf ʃʊd bi kənˈsɪdɚd ˈstɹɑŋɡɚ ðən ðɪ ˈəðɚ.]

Then the North Wind blew as hard as he could, but the more he blew the more closely did the traveler fold his cloak around him;
[ðɛn ðə ˈnoɹθ ˌwɪnd ˈblu əz ˈhɑɹd əz i ˈkʊd, bət ðə ˈmoɹ hi ˈblu ðə ˈmoɹ ˈklosli dɪd ðə ˈtɹævlɚ ˈfold hɪz ˈklok əˈɹaʊnd ɪm;]

And at last the North Wind gave up the attempt. Then the Sun shined out warmly, and immediately the traveler took off his cloak.
ˌ[æn ət ˈlæst ðə ˈnoɹθ ˌwɪnd ˌɡev ˈʌp ði əˈtɛmpt. ˈðɛn ðə ˈsʌn ˈʃaɪnd ˌaʊt ˈwoɹmli ənd ɪˈmidiətli ðə ˈtɹævlɚ ˈtʊk ˌɑf ɪz ˈklok.]

And so the North Wind was obliged to confess that the Sun was the stronger of the two
[ən ˈso ðə ˈnoɹθ ˌwɪnd wəz əˈblaɪʒ tɪ kənˈfɛs ðət ðə ˈsʌn wəz ðə ˈstɹɑŋɡɚ əv ðə ˈtu.]

What dialect is this? Is this really wikipedia's? I see h dropping, [stɹɑŋɡɚ], <they>[ðe], rising of /æ/ in some environments, and optional elision of the voiced dental fricative after /n/. But then a pristine /o/ in <cloak>.

When I say it out loud (only three lines; I think they get in most of the phonemes) it sounds a lot more like this:

IMO it'd be nice to see the whole Wheel of Morphology do it's course ans see this go from analytic to agglutinative/fusional and then back to analytic or even polysynthetic. But it's up to you guys ^^

If possible, add the numbers of years that passed to your changes. If 300 years then 2300 (+300) etc etc

  • Loss of terminal [g] after nasal vowels;
  • Loss of [w] after [ɹ]; [stɹ] > [ʃɹ];
  • [ʔ] > [k];
  • Words ending in nasal consonants are reanalysed as ending in a phantom nasal consonant rather than a historic one;
  • [k(ʰ) g t(ʰ) d] > [t͡ʃ(ʰ) d͡ʒ t͡s(ʰ) d͡z] before front vowels; [k(ʰ) g] > [t͡ʃ(ʰ) d͡ʒ] also before [a];
  • Loss of [w] after velars;
  • Diphthong smoothing, [ɔa ou ɔːã ɪi] > [oː uː õː iː];
  • Coda [p b f] vocalise to [y];
  • The popular orthography is adjusted to reflect the recent changes, but the formal one remains as unalterable as ever;

How does this look?
  • Adverbial particles attach to the verb
  • Up adverbial particle becomes out
  • Adverb Verb Subject Object Adjective order
  • They as a third person pronoun

The-North Wind-and the-Sun, were disputing-they which was the-stronger, when came-along traveler wrapped in cloak warm

Agreed-they that they who first succeeded in making the-traveler take-off his cloak should be considered stronger than the-other.

And at last gave-out the-North Wind the-attempt. Then shined-out warmly the-Sun, and immediately took-off his cloak the-traveler .

(The orthography may need some explanation. It works on the principle that by making a few assignments which are somewhat odd, e.g. ⟨s l ŵ⟩ /θ r ŋ/, it can be completely regular yet still intelligible to modern English-speakers. For the vowel assignments in particular, tabulation may assist:

Code: Select all

a     a
an    ãn
ar    aː
e     ɛ
ei    ei
en    ɛ̃(n)
er    ejə
ewn   ɛ̃w̃ə̃
i     y, i
ir    əj(ə)
on    ɔ̃ː
or    ɔwə
ow    ɔw
oaw   ʊf
ui    ʊj
un    ɔ̃w
uw    ʊw
uir   ʊjə
Of note is the fact that ⟨-r⟩ is used only as a modifier to the preceding vowel or consonant.)

  • [ɛ] elides from the definite article; the orthography is adjusted slightly;
  • [f] > [xw], or [w] in coda; initial [xw] is spelled "hw" where it was formerly "w", but this change is not otherwise noted;
  • Loss of remaining prenasalisation;
  • Sequences of vowel-semivowel-vowel collapse into diphthongs: [ɔwə ʊjə ə̃j̃ə̃ ejə> [ou yj ãj̃ ij]; [ʊj əj] > [yj ij], which the orthography also does not reflect.
